Quick Tip: How the sun and planets “transit” through the Gates

Sun Transiting Through the Gates

The “big picture” of the Human Design chart is the mandala that shows the 64 I’Ching hexagrams in the outer circle, the corresponding 64 gate numbers inside that, the 12 astrological signs inside that, and the Human Design bodygraph in the middle.

The 64 gate energies of Human Design represent the archetypes of our experiences and expressions as human beings. They are the foundational aspects of who we are and how we interact.

Each year the sun moves counterclockwise around the gates of the mandala (like the sun moves through the astrological signs), spending approximately 6 days in each gate. For deeper understanding, know that the sun progresses through all 6 lines of a gate before moving into the next gate.

As the sun (or any other celestial body) moves through a gate it “activates” the energy of that gate. This means that the energy is released to “flow” to us. The sun is considered the most dominant and important transit to be aware of.

The Rest of the Transits

All the other planetary bodies are also moving around the mandala, in their own timing. Together they form the “transits” which exert influence on everyone. When the sun or any other planetary body is in a particular gate, everyone on earth temporarily experiences the activation of that energy. We are all “bathed” in that energy. This is what is meant when you hear that a particular energy is transiting.

Which planet (or sun, earth, or node) is activating a gate will determine how that gate energy impacts us. For example, if the earth is activating a gate then that gate energy will be very grounding. If Mercury is activating a gate, that gate energy will affect how or what we communicate.

How Transits Work

The transits do NOT change your chart. The energetic structure of your chart remains the same throughout your life. But the transits affect us and can temporarily give us the “flavor” of experiencing that energy directly. A transit can even give us the temporary experience of having defined centers at either end of the transiting gate if the transit completes a channel in your chart (this is called an “electromagnetic”) or if multiple planetary transits bring an entire channel into activation at the same time.

Just remember that these effects are temporary and usually mild, if they are felt at all. However, if you are particularly sensitive personally or very aware of energies around you, knowing what the transits are doing can help you to make sense of your experiences and put these energies into their proper perspective.

Knowing about them can also help you to “leverage” those energies when they are available. For example, if you have an open Will Center (also called the Heart or Ego Center) and a particular transit completes a channel for you giving you temporary definition in your Will Center, you can know that you will have greater access to willpower energy and to deliberately exerting your will during that transit period.

I have two favorite resources for keeping track of the transits:

  1. Karen Curry Parker’s 2020 Human Design Evolution Guide, which focuses on the sun transits and provides affirmations, writing assignments, and EFT setups for each transit; it is updated annually. (this is an affiliate link)
  2. The Zen Human Design Pocket Ephemeris, which shows all of the transits for the year in a handy pocket-size booklet; it is updated annually. There is also a multi-year ephemeris in a larger book format available. I use the 2001-2025 edition. (this is not an affiliate link)

Also, most free online chart software will allow you to create a Just Now chart which shows all the planetary gate activations at the moment you create the chart.

How Does Your Personal Chart Relate to the Transits?

Your Human Design chart is a snapshot of the transits at the moment of your birth (shown as the black gate numbers) and at approximately 3 months prior to your birth (shown as the red gate numbers). As you understand your chart and the impacts of those gate energies on your life, you’ll begin to realize the potential impact that these transiting energies have every moment of our lives. Nothing stays still out there! The planets are always moving and always activating energies that affect us.

The imprinting of the transits at our birth is their most powerful impact on us. But also we swim in a sea of transit energies from the moment we are born.

Article: Waiting… love it or hate it?

Below I look at how each Human Design Type is designed to WAIT in some form (and why that’s so hard sometimes!). But first I want to share a story.

When I was growing up, my mom always had an African Violet plant or two growing on the kitchen window sill above the sink. I remember being fascinated by their firm but soft and fuzzy leaves, and their delicate and intensely purple little flowers. Sometimes she had ones with blue or pink flowers.

About a year ago, I finally decided to buy my first African Violet plant and put it on the window sill above my kitchen sink, to remind me of my mom. I really miss her (she passed in 2008) and liked the idea of seeing that plant on a daily basis.

It had no flowers, and the leaves were very limp at first as it adjusted to its new home. [continue reading…]

Article: Hurricanes, Earthquakes and Fires. . . What do they mean?

A few years ago, where I live was side-swiped by powerful Hurricane Irma. I live in central Florida near Atlantic coast, and we received a few nasty wind/rain bands but were spared the brunt of its force. I felt more exhausted from the tension of the pre-storm uncertainty than from the actual preparations and storm’s battering itself. As a consequence of that event and hurricane activity across the globe since then, I’ve given a lot of thought to “reasons” for so much turbulence near and far.

Major hurricanes in the Caribbean/Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, plus major earthquakes in Mexico, devastating fires in the west and northwest—and that’s just in North America! What does all of this mean? Is there a meaning to it, or are these simply random acts of nature?

I don’t have concrete answers to these questions, but I have found some comfort and understanding by looking to Human Design for insights, as well as to nature herself. [continue reading…]

Article: Are You Ready for the Coming Changes?

Human Design’s 2027 “Solar Plexus Mutation” is less than 10 years away now. It predicts significant shifts in how we operate personally, in relationships, and in community.

How we do business will change. How we eat, how we bond with each other, and the functioning of our governments and other support structures will change. Because WE will be changing—from the inside out.

Bottom line:  Change is coming, and it’s already begun.

Massive changes like these take time. They don’t happen overnight. They start decades before and take many decades after, to fully integrate and fully play out. [continue reading…]

Article: NOT an Excuse for Bad Behavior!

A lady recently wrote to me that, unbeknownst to her, her 14 year old son learned from friends that he was a Manifestor type, learned that he was supposed to inform not ask for permission, that he was not supposed to be controlled, that he was not here to work and, apparently, that his Generator mother deserved to be punished for trying to control him.

According to her, this budding young man changed dramatically from a sweet, thoughtful youth into a raging, violent teenager who began physically abusing her. She feared for her safety around him. He stopped studying for school, was unhappy, unproductive, and angry most of the time.

She blames the Human Design information given to him for this radical shift in her son. [continue reading…]

Quick Tip: When Logic Isn’t “Predictable”

In a recent advanced Human Design class I’m taking, we had a wonderful discussion I wanted to share with you about the Logic Circuitry in the chart and our human fascination with predictability.

The Logic Circuit (more formally referred to as the Understanding Circuit) is part of the Collective Circuit Group in the Human Design chart.

Collective Circuitry is about humanity as a whole and the “greater good.”  Its theme is SHARING.

The Logic Circuit within it is all about LOGIC and patterns. It questions, probes, tests, and refines our understanding of patterns which help us predict the future, and thus survive as a species. When A combines with B, it produces C. When we plant crops in the spring, they grow and produce a harvest. When we plant crops in the winter, they die.

You get the idea.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Although there are three ways of “knowing” in the archetype of humanity as seen via the chart, Logic is the one that dominates our western cultures and gives us science, the scientific method of inquiry, and our mechanistic view of the world.   [continue reading…]

Quick Spotlight: How Human Design Helped My Mom-in-Law

First, technically she’s not my mother-in-law because her son Charlie and I aren’t married. But he and I have been together for more than 20 years and she is absolutely family to me so I consider her my mom-in-law.

Her husband (my dad-in-law) passed away last August and her declining physical and cognitive function have led us to find an assisted living facility near us for her to live in.

When Charlie and his brothers made that decision, they discussed how and when to approach her with this news. They weren’t sure if telling her right away was best or if waiting until just before the move would be better. Charlie asked for my suggestions (it’s always wise to ask a Projector for suggestions!).

I consulted her Human Design chart.  [continue reading…]

Quick Tip: Having a Mission vs. Having a Life Purpose

I received such wonderful feedback on my last post about some of us not being designed to have “a Mission” in life (you may read it here), that I wanted to address some questions that came in.

First Question

One reader wrote that she has a Defined Identity Center (yellow diamond in middle of chart) but has no idea who she is, why she’s here, or what her mission is in life.

This situation can be caused by several issues:  [continue reading…]

Quick Tip: Do you have a Mission? (if not, it’s okay, some of us don’t need one)

I was recently inspired by the website of a business coach/teacher who had done a great job of sharing his beliefs and the foundations on which his business is built.

What came out of this inspiration for me was my own unique version. Mine came out as a Motto, a Mission, and a Mindset. It just flowed.

I had been working on various versions of something like this for several years. I sure love it when it all comes together and pours out in a single flash!

That’s the reward, I guess, for patience and surrendering to the right timing when it finally happens. (Though I admit to not always being patient about such things… I’m working on that.)

Here’s the thing. Some of us are more likely–BY DESIGN–to have a clear, compelling mission in our lives. And some of us are not.  [continue reading…]
