Series: Ego Energies of the Will #3 – Gate 21 “Control”

This series explains the energy of each gate around the Will Center so you can learn to leverage willpower and make your impact on the world in ways that are correct for YOU. For each gate, we’ll cover the circuitry of the gate, its gifts and challenges, its “impact,” and practical ways to apply this information. The Introduction to this series can be found here.

Circuitry

Every gate energy belongs to particular circuitry within the chart, which is like an electrical circuit board. This circuitry shows the evolutionary role of the gate energy and how the energy moves through the chart. Each Circuit Group has two Circuits within it.

Circuitry of this Gate

Circuit Group: Tribal
The Tribal Circuit Group is concerned with survival of the tribe. It provides support and protection for family and community and transforms individual ambition into teamwork. This is group energy in which the good of the tribe/family comes first.

Circuit: Ego
The Ego Circuit energies govern the structure of how we function in groups, including laws, values, business agreements, marriage, families, communities, and management of resources. It contains emotion, but no logic (that’s in the Collective Logic circuitry).

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 21 defined in your chart, you are here to control your circumstances and you generally thrive in positions of control within your family, tribe, company, or community. Control is both a “need” and a “gift” for you.

The highest expression of Gate 21 is in supporting the sustainable abundance and wise use of resources for your family/tribe/business through your dependable skills and care, and your natural focus on the material world.

You are likely to be conservative with resources and spending, while the electromagnetic energy—Gate 45—is more likely to spend and be generous (or possibly frivolous) with resources.

You are willing to work hard, but to feel successful you must have some amount of control over your situation. You particularly like to take good care of your own belongings, and you are willing to care for the resources and possessions of others if you feel the deal is fair.

You have a strong drive for independence and dislike feeling dependent on or controlled by others. The deep lesson of this Gate 21 energy is in learning to surrender to what you cannot control (which, let’s face it, is most things in life!). Trying to control things that cannot be controlled is a recipe for frustration and feeling like a failure.

Low Expression of this Gate

In the low expression of this energy, you may be trying to prove that you are in control, your ego may try to dominate others, and you may have trouble delegating responsibilities to others for fear of losing control of the project or situation.

Gate 21 can be “control freak” energy causing you to dig your heels in, be very stubborn, engage in power struggles, and push with your ego and will (whether your Will Center is defined in your chart or not).

All of these behaviors can potentially cause burnout and even heart problems. Gate 21 is related to the heart muscle in the body and the stress of being in control, or not being in control, or striving for control can lead to stress-related problems.

Plus, there is a gnarly conundrum within Gate 21 energy: you want control for yourself (and for your ego), but this is tribal energy so your control must serve or benefit others in some way or there will be tribal consequences for you to face.

Ego Impact of this Gate

From an ego perspective, your impact with Gate 21 comes from the power of control. You want to control people and processes in order to determine circumstances and outcomes.

To be effective (and beneficial to the tribe), control must be exerted correctly, according to Type, or you will meet with strong resistance. Manifestors must inform before assuming control. Generators and Manifesting Generators must first respond to the circumstance before taking control. Projectors must be recognized and invited into a role with control. Reflectors must sense that others need someone to take control and then step into that role if they have the energy for it.

Tips for Using this Energy

-Pick your battles carefully! Don’t spend precious energy on little power struggles and become too drained to take on the important challenges.

-How do you do that? Learn to recognize when your Gate 21 energy kicks in and wants to have control, then make a conscious choice about whether it’s worth the effort (or the consequences).

-If you can’t control some of the big circumstances of your life (who you work for, where you live, etc.), at least successfully control what you CAN control—what you eat, wear, watch/listen to, your self-care, etc.

-Make peace with what is outside of your control, which is nearly everything! The only real control we have is over our thoughts, beliefs, and choices. Choose wisely, and the rest will unfold naturally.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Will Center:

Gate 40, with the impact of “withhold.” If your Gate 40 is defined, notice when you have the impulse to withhold resources (including attention and affection) in order to exert influence in a situation.

Series: Ego Energies of the Will #2 – Gate 51 “Compete”

Circuit Group: Individual
The Individual Circuit Group serves the world by bringing forth uniquely individual change (mutation) which indirectly empowers others to transform.  It is personal energy, here to follow its own direction and not fit in with others.

Circuit: Centering
The Centering Circuit energies help us to be centered in the truth of who we are and provide direction to others through our own self-empowered direction.  This is spiritual energy that is also part of our humanness.

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 51 defined in your chart, you are here to help others transform their perspective by initiating (or shocking) them out of their normal view into seeing a bigger picture. Surprise is your ally as it helps you to broaden the awareness of others!

This gate energy provides you with the resilience to handle the shocks that may come your way, allowing you to grow from these life-changing experiences, including near-death experiences (NDEs).

You like to test yourself and see if you can be first or best at something. This is interpreted by others as being “competitive” but you’re mostly intent on competing with yourself.

You can be daring and unpredictable, breaking through your limitations (real or perceived) and expanding your possibilities. In business and in life, this can translate into a willingness to be bold, courageous, and take risks.

The very highest expression of the Gate 51 is in challenging and initiating yourself into the love of spirit and universal unconditional love, then challenging and initiating others into this personal growth of transcending the ego.

Low Expression of this Gate

In the low expression of this energy, you may be overly competitive and measure your self-worth by comparing yourself to others. Your zeal to be first or best can cause you to be driven in unhealthy ways.

Some risk-taking is positive and moves you forward, but beware of foolish risks that put you in real danger. Your unpredictability can be exciting to others, but also frightening to them.

One of your greatest gifts is to shock or stun people for their own good, but if they are not ready to be challenged in this way the result may not be what you intended. Sense their openness to it and wait for the right timing.

Ego Impact of this Gate

From an ego perspective, your impact comes from your competitive spirit that brings out the best in you and in others. Your ego can be a driving force for “good” in this way.  Though, ultimately, your greatest impact is from transcendence of ego and connection with spirit.

Tips for Using this Energy

-Stay centered; develop practices that return you to your “true north” whenever you get disconnected from yourself.

-Take time to rest and recuperate from the challenges and “battles” of living in the world.

-Feel into whether you have the will and courage in any moment to engage/compete; don’t let your ego decide for you.

-Use your Strategy and Authority to help you choose the right timing and circumstances for impacting others with your “shock therapy.”

Next gate moving clockwise around the Will Center:

Gate 21, with the impact of “control.”  If your Gate 21 is defined, notice how often you have the impulse (or even the need) to be in control, whether of yourself, your money, your “stuff,” or the situation.

Series: Ego Energies of the Will #1 – Gate 26 “Influence”

Circuit: Ego
The Ego Circuit energies govern the structure of how we function in groups, including laws, values, business agreements, marriage, families, communities, and management of resources. It contains emotion, but no logic (that’s in the Collective Logic circuitry).

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 26 defined in your chart, you are here to influence and persuade others by transmitting what you believe will improve their lives. You can “sell the dream” and then “close the deal” as the ultimate salesperson.

Your influence can truly benefit others when you share from integrity and from an honest desire to be of service.

Your ego likes recognition and rewards for your efforts, but at a practical level you must be recognized by others in order to have real influence with them. So, building trust ultimately serves everyone.

At the mastery level, you are able to squeeze maximum rewards for yourself from minimum effort which helps you to balance work and rest in your life. The shortcuts you discover ultimately benefit the tribe, but first they benefit you.

Low Expression of this Gate

In the low expression, this energy is called the Trickster because it can manipulate the truth for self-serving purposes. This could include exaggerating, omitting or modifying facts, re-writing bits of history, and even outright lies.

If your ego is power hungry, you will exert your influence for your own goals and demand rewards for your skills and effort.

Only make promises that you know you can keep, or else your reputation and integrity will suffer.

Ego Impact of this Gate

From an ego perspective, your impact is pure “influence” and this influence truly can guide people to a better life! Pay attention to what is specifically motivating your desire to influence.

Even though this energy has potentially self-serving and egotistical expressions, it is still tribal and someone with the Gate 26 defined wants to be a contribution to the good of the group, improving the support, protection, and even survival of the tribe.

Tips for Using this Energy

-Be sure to keep a healthy work-rest balance in your life.

-Get clear about your goals and intentions. Your greatest ability to serve and influence comes from your integrity and from speaking the truth.

-Find ideas, products, people, and beliefs that you know in your heart are helpful to others, and “sell” them with all your persuasive skills.

-You may be a natural at selling, but you might be even more effective if you deliberately hone your skills.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Will Center:

Gate 51, has the ego impact of “competing.”  If your Gate 51 is defined, start noticing how often you have the impulse to be first or best at something, or even to compete with yourself and measure your improvement.

Series: Ego Energies of the Will – Introduction

This post begins a series that explains the energy of each gate around the Will Center so you can learn to leverage willpower and make your impact on the world in ways that are correct for YOU.

Most of us want to have a positive impact on the world and the people around us, but often we don’t know quite how to do that. We see powerful people in the news and in our spheres of activity and wonder what they do to be so influential. How do they manage to have such impact?

And why can’t we do that, too?

The problem, of course, is that what works for them probably won’t work for you.

The solution is to learn how YOU are wired to handle willpower and influence so you can work with your natural energy and align with your innate power.

Few things are as exhausting or distressing as trying to be something (or someone) we are not. Doing this goes against every fiber of our being, and we use what precious little willpower we have in order to overcome our instinctive resistance and just “power through” it. It’s a terrible idea.

When we are authentic in the way we interact with others, when we operate from the truth of Who We Are and express a coherent alignment of our energy, that’s when our true power and influence shine through.

That’s when things go better and flow better. That’s when we have the correct and effective impact on our world that we most desire to have.

What Are “Ego Energies of the Will”?

The Will Center in the Human Design bodygraph, also referred to as the Heart Center or Ego Center, is home to our willpower and gives us several tools with which to influence our world. It is the small triangle just below the diamond shape in the middle of the bodygraph.

This center is connected primarily to the Ego Circuit of the Tribal Circuit Group in the chart. The Will center’s energy is focused on tribal and family interactions, material goods, physical assets, business, and how we value things. And, it is where our ego resides.

Ego is our view of ourselves, determined by our self-esteem and our perceived position in the world. In this context, ego isn’t good or bad, it simply IS. Everyone has an ego. What is important is how we use it and manage its impact on others.

Each gate energy connected with the Will Center indicates a particular approach to exerting impact on the world—a specific way of expressing our power. I call these the “Ego Energies of the Will.”

For example, Gate 26 exerts influence, persuasion and, potentially, manipulation. Gate 51 is competitive and uses shock to have impact. Gate 21 exerts control. Don’t worry, there are also positive expressions of each Will Center gate!

When you have ANY Will Center gates defined (colored) in your chart, using those “energies” correctly will allow you to authentically express your power in life.

It’s also important to understand the Will Gates that are undefined (white) in your chart, because:

  • People in your life may have those defined, and knowing THEIR authentic power will help you in your interactions with them.
  • If you are around someone who has those gates defined, you will take in and amplify that energy. Even though you don’t carry the energy of those gates consistently, you will experience and possibly express those energies at times. Remember, we ALL experience ALL of the chart!
  • When planets or other celestial bodies are passing through any of the Will Gates (transiting), you will likely feel those energies and may notice that those around you expressing them, too.

Bottom Line

These energies—the Ego Energies of the Will—affect the way we exert our power in the world and determine the role our ego plays in our interactions. Armed with this knowledge, you can consciously leverage these energies to your advantage while remaining aligned with the truth and magnificence of Who You Are.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore all four of the gate energies connected to the Will Center, one at a time.

For simplicity, we’ll start with Gate 26, on the left side of the Will Center, and move clockwise around it.

Learn about the Ego Energy of the Gate 26 here >>

Hint:  The energy of Gate 26 is to influence and “sell” ideas or things; its high expression is INTEGRITY.

Series: Voices of the Throat #12 – Gate 16

This series explains the energy of each Gate around the Throat Center so you will know how to communicate effectively and authentically as YOU. For each gate, we’ll cover the circuitry of the gate, its gifts and challenges, its “voice,” and practical ways to apply this information. The Introduction to this series can be found here. Links to the rest of this series are at the end of this post

Circuitry:

Every gate energy belongs to particular circuitry within the chart, which is like an electrical circuit board. This circuitry shows the evolutionary role of the gate energy and how the energy moves through the chart.

Circuitry of this Gate:

Circuit Group: Collective

The Collective Circuit Group serves the greater good and our collective values. It shares information, opinions, experiences, solutions. It is not personal.

Circuit: Logic

The Logic Circuit energies use patterns and logical thinking to understand our world and predict future outcomes.

High Expression of this Gate:

If you have the Gate 16 defined in your chart, you are here to experiment, practice, refine the “pattern,” and eventually develop mastery of something you love.  Both your talent and the recognition of it are earned.

This energy applies to artistic as well as scientific endeavors, including testing and refining solutions to problems.  Because this is Collective energy, any talents you develop and master here are to be shared for the greater good.

There is a perseverance in this energy that comes from the drive for correctness and perfection, but you must love what you’re mastering or else the energy for the perseverance won’t be there.

With dedication, you can transcend the skill itself and merge into artistry and full mastery… as when the dancer becomes the dance.

Low Expression of this Gate:

In the low expression, you may feel self-critical as you seek the perfect way to express your talents and expertise.

This energy has built-in enthusiasm so you might get swept up with excitement and leap into something: a) without due diligence or a plan or paying attention to details, or b) without using your Strategy and Authority to make the correct choice for you.  Any of these can get you into trouble!

As part of the Logic Circuit, which contains “pattern correction” energy, the Gate 16’s comments and opinions can be received by others as criticism.  This is “projected” energy and comments need to be invited to be shared.

Your Voice with this Gate:

This gate uses words that imply, “I experiment, without necessarily using those exact words.  You may say things like, “I’ll keep working on this until I get it right,” or “Let me try that and see if it works,” or “Practice makes perfect!” or “I’m excited about … .”

You may also admit to not having the energy or drive to see something through.

Tips for Using this Energy:

-Enjoy your enthusiasm and let it be infectious!

-Use your Strategy and Authority to make wise choices about what to pursue to mastery, and what to abandon when it no longer calls forth your mastery energy.

-Leverage the other parts of your chart to support the consistent practice and perfection required by this energy.  A Human Design reading can be very helpful with this.

-Trust that recognition of your achievements will come; just keep practicing and improving your skills.

This is the final gate in the Voices of the Throat series.  I hope you’ve enjoyed all of these gate explanations and found them useful.

I will be putting the entire series into a specialized ebook and adding extra material to enhance its scope and practical application.  I’ll let you know when it’s ready!

Series: Voices of the Throat #11 – Gate 20 “I Am Now”

This series explains the energy of each Gate around the Throat Center so you will know how to communicate effectively and authentically as YOU. For each gate, we’ll cover the circuitry of the gate, its gifts and challenges, its “voice,” and practical ways to apply this information. The Introduction to this series can be found here. Links to the rest of this series are at the end of this post.

Circuitry:

Every gate energy belongs to particular circuitry within the chart, which is like an electrical circuit board. This circuitry shows the evolutionary role of the gate energy and how the energy moves through the chart.

Circuitry of this Gate:

Circuit Group: Individual

The Individual Circuit Group serves the world by bringing forth uniquely individual change (mutation) which indirectly empowers others to transform.  It is personal energy, here to follow its own direction and not fit in with others.

Circuit: Knowing

The Knowing Circuit energies are agents of the creative process that drive human growth and evolution.  These energies understand the world by simply “knowing,” and are not based on logic or experience.

Special Circuit: Integration

The Gate 20 is also one of four Gates that form the complex channels called Integration.  They are closely related to Individual Circuitry, but not technically part of it.  These energies are focused on bringing change (mutation) through individual survival, living in the now, integrating awareness over time, and generally having little concern for impact on others.

High Expression of this Gate:

If you have the Gate 20 defined in your chart, you are here to be fully present and aware in the moment—which supports your survival, your intuitive knowing, your right action, and your self-focus.

Being present means not holding on to the past or anticipating the future, but being fully absorbed in the NOW… watching, waiting, contemplating.

When you take the time to BE and integrate your awareness, your clarity and wisdom emerge, and your words and actions will come forth in right timing

You can be fiercely individual, marching to your very own drummer and may even be accused of being self-absorbed and oblivious to others.  You are designed for this—it’s not wrong!  This is how you bring about change, by doing things in your own, unique way.

However, you also have an ability to recognize the talents and gifts of others and to unify them through your voice of clarity about present circumstances.  After all, this energy does get to the Throat and so it is designed to communicate its awareness.

Low Expression of this Gate:

In the low expression, you may feel lonely or melancholy—a quality shared with the other Individual Circuitry gates in the chart.  The Gate 20 is not a social energy and, especially if you have strong Tribal energy in the rest of your chart, you may feel that you want to “belong,” but also feel that you don’t.

If you are not aware in the now and not taking the time needed to be fully present, you may get your timing wrong and miss your “right action” opportunities.

If your Gate 20 is not connected through defined channels to a motor center (Will, Solar Plexus, Sacral or Root), then it’s a verbal gate, not an action gate, and your impulses for action may be off the mark.

Because of your existential focus on the now, you may not know what you’re going to say or do until it actually happens and you may find that you blurt out words or do things unexpectedly.

Your Voice with this Gate:

This gate uses words that imply you know who you are and are aware in the present moment.  The voice is, “I am now, though few will actually use those words.

You may have trouble talking about and planning for the future because of your NOW focus.

Tips for Using this Energy:

-Take all the time you need to process and integrate what you know, feel, learn, and experience.  Awareness and wisdom cannot be rushed.

-Pay attention to aligning your thoughts, beliefs, desires, and actions.

-Trust that slowing down, being present, and not speaking (and/or not taking action) will reveal the correct next words/actions for you.  Surrender to Divine Order, right timing, and right action.

-Don’t be afraid to be different and to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing.  That is your greatest gift.  Follow the beat of your own drummer.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Throat Center:

Gate 16, with the Voice “I experiment.”  If your Gate 16 is defined, start noticing how often you have the impulse to apply logic and experimentation to figure out if it works.

Series: Voices of the Throat #10 – Gate 31 “I Lead”

Circuit Group: Collective

The Collective Circuit Group serves the greater good and our collective values. It shares information, opinions, experiences, solutions. It is not personal.

Circuit: Understanding/Logic

The Logic Circuit energies use patterns to understand our world and predict future outcomes.

High Expression of this Gate:

If you have the Gate 31 defined in your chart, you are here to influence and lead others via the democratic mechanism of the support of the majority.  This energy represents the highest form of human interaction:  democracy, where each person in the group has a voice and a vote, and the majority rules.

You represent the needs and desires of the group and serve on their behalf.  You wield power by being granted it (via election or appointment), but to lead effectively you need to earn the trust and cooperative will of the group.

You grasp the patterns and trends that affect the collective and hold a vision for moving people into a better future.  Though this energy can have negative consequences, it’s most often applied to benefit the greater good.

Rather than doing FOR others, you guide them to achieve their goals for themselves.  You have a keen awareness of the needs and interests of the group and how best to serve them.  You are not a dictator or in pursuit of your own agenda.

Low Expression of this Gate:

In the low expression, you may lead others in less-than-ideal (or even disastrous) directions—whether intentional or not.  If not in touch with what they really want and need, you can easily misguide them.

Being in the Logic Circuity, the Gate 31 energy relies on patterns and logical processes but those can change as progress marches forward and new knowledge is gained.  So you must continually keep your ear to the ground, adapt as things change, and keep honing your leadership skills.

This is a projected gate energy and, like all projected energy, must wait for recognition and right timing to express its leadership and influence.  If you’re not invited to lead under the right circumstances, you may struggle to be effective.

There is also a low expression of trying to cling to power and losing sight of the original impulse to be of service for the greater good.

Your Voice with this Gate:

This gate uses words that imply that, “I lead.”  You have a natural leadership style though you’re not necessarily a formal leader (i.e., elected official).  You are often granted leadership or influencing roles in whatever group you are participating.

Tips for Using this Energy:

-Allow leadership opportunities and positions of influence to come to you, then use your Strategy and Authority to know whether to accept or decline.  Don’t chase these opportunities, but don’t shy away from them when they show up.

-Focus on being of service, even if you don’t always get credit for it.

-Share power and listen to what people want; don’t assume you know.

-Don’t get drawn into working on people’s goals for them; guide and empower them to accomplish them on their own.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Throat Center:

Gate 20, with the Voice “I am now.”  If your Gate 20 is defined, start noticing how often you are focused in the present moment with no thought about the past or the future.

Series: Voices of the Throat #9 – Gate 8 “I Contribute”

The Knowing Circuit energies are agents of the creative process that drives human growth and evolution.  These energies understand the world by simply “knowing,” not based on logic or experience.

High Expression of this Gate:

If you have the Gate 8 defined in your chart, you are here to make your contribution to society by first gaining people’s attention and then promoting truths, causes, ideas, people, or products that you “know” will be of benefit to them.

You are particularly drawn to “mutative” ideas, creative solutions, and innovative people. Your lifestyle is the expression of your unique identity and your unconventional path in life.  At your very best, you are an exuberant creative role model.

Your creative expression serves to promote what you believe in, like an agent or representative, rather than directly creating.  If you also have the Gate 1 defined in your chart, then you are the creator as well.

Others will then follow your lead, or not.  Your impact is accomplished through leading by example and empowering others, not by leading directly or by dictating, forcing or demanding.  If, however, you also have Gate 31 or Gate 45 defined, you will lead more directly.

Low Expression of this Gate:

In the low expression, you may feel lonely or melancholy.  As with all Individual gate energies, the Gate 8 is designed to stand out from, rather than fit in with, the crowd.  It can be lonely on the leading edge!

This is a projected gate energy and, like all projected energy, must wait for recognition and right timing to express your uniqueness and truth so that you can be seen and acknowledged.

The Gate 8 energy can feel like a relentlessly driving force within you to save the world, or at least save people from themselves!  It can wake you up at night in a cold sweat with an urgency to make a difference in the world, especially if you don’t yet know what to do or how to do that.

Your impulse to want to help others can wear you out.  If you have Gate 27 defined or have an undefined Solar Plexus Center, you may especially struggle with setting and maintaining healthy boundaries.

Your Voice with this Gate:

This gate uses the words, “I contribute.”  Or, perhaps, “I know I can make a difference.”

If you have this gate defined, it’s appropriate for you to say these words often. Or, perhaps you admit that, “I don’t know if I can make a difference…”

Tips for Using this Energy:

-Don’t be afraid to march to the beat of your own drummer… you are designed to stand out, not fit in.

-This energy can drive you hard and drive you crazy.  It helps to understand all other aspects of your Human Design chart, so you know how to manage this drive in ways that are correct for YOU.

-You’re designed to be public in promoting and advocating for what you believe in.  Learning marketing, PR, or public speaking may be helpful.  Though with Gate 8 defined, you may also be a natural at these skills!

-Understand how you are wired to draw attention and recognition from others.  For example, a Manifesting Generator will do that differently than a Projector.  A second line Profile (e.g., 2/4) will do it differently than a fifth line Profile (e.g., 5/1).  Know thyself.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Throat Center:

Gate 31, with the Voice “I lead.”  If your Gate 31 is defined, start noticing how often you have the impulse to lead, to be of service, or to represent (and try to fulfill) the needs and desires of others.

Series: Voices of the Throat #8 – Gate 33 “I Remember”

Circuit Group: Collective
The Collective Circuit Group serves the greater good and our collective values. It shares information, opinions, experiences, solutions. It is not personal.

Circuit: Sensing
The Sensing Circuit energies use experiences and reflection to learn from the past and discover the cycles of life.

High Expression of this Gate:

If you have the Gate 33 defined in your chart, you are a wise storyteller able to share many sides of a story and glean the lessons to be learned from it.

You must take time to retreat into the privacy and comfort of a safe space to process what you have learned and what you want to share.  This quiet alone time allows you to reflect on your experiences and the experiences of others, recuperate your energy, and decide what lessons to take with you as you move forward and re-join the activity around you.

This gate is the endpoint of the experiential portion of the Sensing Circuit. In the highest expression of Gate 33, what you learn and what you share are part of the collective human experience and they advance our evolving consciousness.

Each cycle of experience, and each pause between experiences, helps you grow wiser and more influential.  Your memories and knowledge contribute to the larger body of wisdom and provide guideposts to our deeper human truths.

You have an instinct for which experiences you need to have for your own growth, and you may break with tradition and expectations of others in order to follow your own path.

Low Expression of this Gate:

In the low expression, you may have specific expectations that go unmet by life’s varied experiences, and your disappointment (or anger, frustration or bitterness) can cause you to miss the valuable lessons there.

The challenge for Gate 33 energy is waiting for the right timing to share your stories and lessons—a common theme in Human Design… and in life!

Another challenge with this energy is getting stuck in reviewing and re-living the past instead of reflecting on it and then moving forward.

Even if you are a fast-moving and very social Manifesting Generator, carve out the alone time demanded by this gate.  If you don’t, life will be a blur and you’ll miss the nuggets of wisdom buried in your flurry of activity. The keynote of “retreat” for this gate can literally mean occasional trips to a spa, silent retreat, or relaxing vacation.

Your Voice with this Gate:

This gate uses the words, “I remember.”

If you have this gate defined, it’s appropriate for you to say these words often. Or, perhaps you admit that, “I don’t remember…”

You often know the hidden truths and hold the history of the family or organization, becoming a storehouse of wisdom, knowledge and sacred memories.

Tips for Using this Energy:

-Bear witness to events as they unfold and resist the temptation to judge or force them.  When you accomplish this, their lessons will be clear and useful.

-Surrender to and embrace the path that feels right to you (by following your Strategy and Authority!) and trust that, ultimately, your personal experiences will contribute to the greater good.

-Trust that everything will make sense eventually, though it often doesn’t make sense in the moment.  Instead of trying to figure things out, be present moment by moment and revel in the experience.

-It’s important that you “learn from hindsight” so don’t be afraid to think about and work through your experiences, including the unpleasant ones, to find the hidden lessons.

-Recognize that some memories and stories need to be shared (as long as you wait for the right timing), and some need simply to be forgiven and forgotten.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Throat Center:

Gate 8, with the Voice “I contribute.”  If your Gate 8 is defined, start noticing how often you say this or say, “I don’t know if I can contribute…”

Series: Voices of the Throat #7 – Gate 45 “I Have”

Circuit Group: Tribal
The Tribal Circuit is concerned with survival of the tribe.

It contains emotion, but no logic (logic is in the Collective Logic circuitry).

High Expression of this Gate:

If you have the Gate 45 defined in your chart, you are a natural leader and teacher who likes to be in control and “make stuff happen!”  This is not democratic/representative leadership!

You are a “gatherer” of people and resources, and your instinct is to protect and guide them.  But you are not here to do the work itself—there is no Sacral energy here.

Often called the gate of the King or Queen, this energy can have a regal presence and others will defer to your rule.  Like a benevolent ruler, you can rally your subjects, ensure their needs are met, and bestow peace on your realm.

You call the shots as the singular voice of the tribe.”  Though your love of control makes it hard to delegate to others, you work best when others (especially those with a defined Gate 21, which is the other half of the 45’s channel) do the actual allocation and management of the resources.

Low Expression of this Gate:

In the low expression, you may be deeply possessive about money and material items, and even possessive in relationships.

You may be autocratic in your leadership style and dominate others in order to stay in control.  While this is somewhat natural for you, making the effort to inform others before you take action (even if you’re not a Manifestor) will help to smooth ruffled feathers and avoid negative reactions.

Though you can be shrewd with money, you may prefer to distribute resources (spend money) rather than conserve.  This can lead to conflicts with those who have the Gate 21 defined, who usually prefer to be careful with spending.

Because of your penchant for control, you may not work well with others or take orders well within a hierarchy structure so you may prefer to work for yourself.  You also may overwork and therefore need to be deliberate in maintaining a healthy work-rest balance.

Your Voice with this Gate:

This gate uses the words, “I have…” or more appropriately, “We have.”

If you have this gate defined, it’s appropriate for you to say these words often. This is tribal energy so you’ll often speak for the group, with an emphasis on material possessions and resources.

You also may speak of what you “don’t have” and there may be a tendency to see the world as divided into “haves” and “have-nots.”  You definitely want to be among the “haves.”

Tips for Using this Energy:

-Pay attention to opportunities to lead others, and step into that role when your Strategy and Authority give you the green light.

-Notice your tendency to be authoritarian and soften it with informing, awareness, and a willingness to share control when appropriate.

-Make sure you build rest into your schedule, so you maintain a healthy work-rest balance.

-Be deliberate about tracking your finances in ways that work for you, so that you can enjoy yourself and be generous without overspending.

-Knowing you can be fiercely protective of people and things you care about, be selective about who and what qualifies for this protection.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Throat Center:

Gate 33, with the Voice “I remember.”  If your Gate 33 is defined, start noticing how often you say this or say, “I don’t remember…”
