Series: Passions of the Solar Plexus #7 – Gate 49 “Revolution and Principles”

This series explains the energy of each gate around the Emotional Solar Plexus Center so you can learn to harness your natural passions and creative energy to manifest the life you desire. For each gate, we’ll cover the circuitry of the gate, its gifts and challenges, its “passion,” and practical ways to apply this information. These points hold true whether your Solar Plexus Center itself is defined or open. The Introduction to this series can be found here.

Circuitry

Every gate energy belongs to particular circuitry within the chart, which is like an electrical circuit board. This circuitry shows the evolutionary role of the gate energy and how the energy moves through the chart. Each Circuit Group has two Circuits within it.

Circuitry of this Gate

Circuit Group: Tribal
The Tribal Circuit Group is concerned with survival of the tribe. It provides support and protection for family and community and transforms individual ambition into teamwork. This is group energy in which the good of the tribe/family comes first.

Circuit: Ego
The Ego Circuit energies govern the structure of how we function in groups, including laws, values, business agreements, marriage, families, communities, and management of resources. It contains emotion, but no logic (that’s in the Collective Logic circuitry).

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 49 defined in your chart, you have strong principles especially those governing relationships and you are willing to start a “revolution” and turn relationships upside down if your principles are violated.

The revolutions and disruptions you are willing to create are principle-based, not knee-jerk reactions, and you will make radical changes if warranted. This gate is sometimes referred to as the divorce gate. If an important line is crossed in any relationship, you will reject the relationship and move on.

Because this gate is connected to the Emotional Solar Plexus Center, your principles can be affected by the ups and downs of emotional energy (even if your Solar Plexus Center is undefined), so you need constant and effective communication in your relationships to ensure clarity. You also need time for clarity to emerge, although once you are clear, change can be abrupt.

This is tribal energy so the highest expression of this energy relates to honoring the principles and values of the tribe and finding your place within the tribal hierarchy. Issues that result in revolutions and even war usually revolve around resources that serve the tribe; this would include relationships with the potential to produce offspring for the tribe’s sustainability.

Those with defined Gate 49 energy value loyalty and expect to be obeyed! You also may be very sensitive to and feel connected with animals, especially mammals.

Low Expression of this Gate

If your Gate 49 is defined, you tend to see life and relationships as either/or, black or white, with nothing in between. “You’re with me or against me, there is no middle ground.” While this keeps things simple, the reality is that there are plenty of “grey” areas in life and it may be appropriate at times to compromise on some of your principles.

You may struggle with navigating that middle ground and with knowing when and how to negotiate and compromise. As a result, you may quit too soon or stay too long in a relationship, and even avoid intimacy out of fear of rejection.

In the lowest expression, this energy can be violent in its rejection of others and its revolutionary zeal. You also may fear the unpredictability of nature and of animals.

Passions of this Gate

With your Gate 49 defined, you have a passion for standing up for your principles and creating social change and reform through principle-based revolution.

This energy also relates to courtship, intimacy, and the principles and values that define marriage. So, you have a passion for romantic relationships and the process of “wooing” a partner.

The best way to fulfill your passions is to be very clear about which principles are so important that you are not willing to compromise them.

Tips for Using this Energy

-Be aware of your “all or nothing” perspective and think ahead about lesser issues on which you might be willing to compromise. In other words, get your priorities straight and clear.

-Take a little time to explore the principles and values you were raised with, and then look at how your own have evolved over time.

-Get very clear about your non-negotiable agreements and boundaries in your most important relationships and communicate them clearly and lovingly. It’s important that your partner, family, and friends understand where you stand and the consequences of breaching those agreements or boundaries.

-If you are in a not-yet-formalized romantic relationship, focus on romance and courtship, and also discuss each of your important principles for a long-term relationship.

Series: Passions of the Solar Plexus #6 – Gate 55 “Faith and Abundance”

Circuit Group: Individual
The Individual Circuit Group serves the world by bringing forth uniquely individual change (mutation) which indirectly empowers others to transform. It is personal energy, here to follow its own direction and not fit in with others.

Circuit: Knowing
The Knowing Circuit energies are agents of the creative process that drives human growth and evolution. These energies understand the world by simply “knowing,” not based on logic or experience.

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 55 defined in your chart, you innately recognize spirit as the true source of abundance, not material items. You have trust and faith in the abundant nature of spirit and the universe.

It takes courage and frequent leaps of faith to surrender to spirit as the source of abundance, not hard work or willpower. As you do this, you “change the world” by lifting the spirit of others and opening new possibilities of abundance of spirit here on earth.

Your moods and emotional highs and lows fuel your energy (even if your Solar Plexus Center is undefined), so you must wait for the right timing—the right energy and the right mood—before taking action.

You are creative, probably romantic, and deeply auditory, so you are affected by sound and also the words and tone of what is said. Your acoustic awareness leads you to be musical.

Low Expression of this Gate

If Gate 55 is defined in your chart, your low expression of this energy is moodiness, melancholy, and melodrama. These affect your perceptions about the world and other people and can lead to eating disorders, escape behaviors, and even addictions.

Despite your intense emotions, you may actually not know what you are feeling. This can lead to being indecisive, fickle, and overly sensitive. Then you are apt to take things personally, which only makes matters worse.

In the lowest expression of this energy, you don’t trust Source and don’t have faith in natural abundance, so you resort to hard work and force to get what you need. Your fears center around lacking passion in your life and experiencing “emotional emptiness.”

Passions of this Gate

With your Gate 55 defined, you have a passion for faith as the source of creative power and the source of limitless abundance. You love being in love, especially being in love with life and having a highly spirited life!

Tips for Using this Energy

-Make peace with your moods and don’t try to control them. Try to enjoy your low moods… they might be your most creative times!

-Honor your moods by asking yourself, “Am I in the mood to ….?” However, you may need input from those around you to be completely aware of your mood and feelings.

-Take your time in making decisions to gain clarity about your feelings on the issues. Even if your Solar Plexus Center is undefined, notice if you’re feeling moody or experiencing an emotional wave and take your time with decisions.

-Don’t take things personally—you’ll be much happier!

-Use your favorite music or sounds to soothe your low moods.

-Be deliberate in aligning yourself with feelings of abundance and faith.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Solar Plexus Center:

Gate 49, with a passion for “revolution and principles.” If your Gate 49 is defined, start noticing how you react when principles that are important to you are violated in some way. Do you feel like upending the situation?

Series: Passions of the Solar Plexus #5 – Gate 30 “Passion”

Circuit Group: Collective
The Collective Circuit Group serves the greater good and our collective values. It shares information, opinions, experiences, solutions. It is not personal.

Circuit: Sensing
The Sensing Circuit energies use experiences and reflection to learn from the past and discover the cycles of life.

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 30 defined in your chart, you have the passion, drive, and energy to create the next new experience in your life. Your desires and emotions yearn to express themselves, including the thrill of being alive!

Your “fire in the belly” drives you forward and makes you seem quite intense compared to other people. Although this is intense energy, it is also projected energy so you still must wait for right timing to express your feelings and desires correctly and to take action effectively.

Even if an experience does not turn out as you hoped, if you entered it with clarity and right timing you will learn the right lessons from it. This is collective energy so the true purpose of your lessons and experiences is to share them with others to serve the greater good.

You may think you crave the freedom to pursue your fantasies and desires but you actually crave the expression of your creative energy.

Low Expression of this Gate

If Gate 30 is defined in your chart, your low expression of this energy may be an overly intense and dramatic approach to life. You can burn yourself out with your own intensity and passion and/or burn out those around you.

You may not know what you actually desire or hunger for, so you take a scatter-shot approach. This can lead to a wild ride of leaping into your desires without waiting for clarity. This can also lead to disappointment when your expectations are not met.

Passions of this Gate

With your Gate 30 defined, you have a passion for passion and for bringing your dreams into reality. To fulfill this, you must nurture your passions and desires and learn from your experiences.

EXTRA NOTE – THE EXPERIENTIAL WAY

The Experiential Way is a term often given to a particular segment of the Sensing Circuit (within Collective Circuitry). It follows the progress of our human creative impulse from a dream to a completed experience.

Gate 41 – fantasize, dream, and envision what you might want
Gate 30 – focus on a specific desire and pursue it with passion
Gate 36 – eagerly jump into the experience you desire to have
Gate 35 – collect experiences and apply what you’ve learned

Tips for Using this Energy

-Connect with your passion and your fire. Focus on what your heart desires!

-Let go of expectations and enjoy the experience fully. Learn to not take experiences personally; they are just experiences.

-Whether your Solar Plexus Center is defined or not, take time for your decisions if emotions and desires are involved. Don’t leap impulsively into new experiences. Use your Strategy and Authority to clearly feel which desires to pursue.

-Find and share your passions with others who are open to hearing about them.

-Recognize your own intensity and appreciate that most people are not as intense or passionate as you are.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Solar Plexus Center:

Gate 55, with a passion for “faith and abundance.” If your Gate 55 is defined, start noticing your level of faith (or lack of faith) in the abundance and benevolence of the universe.

Series: Passions of the Solar Plexus #4 – Gate 36

Circuit Group: Collective
The Collective Circuit Group serves the greater good and our collective values. It shares information, opinions, experiences, solutions. It is not personal.

Circuit: Sensing
The Sensing Circuit energies use experiences and reflection to learn from the past and discover the cycles of life.

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 36 defined in your chart, you have a hunger for the next new experience and a talent for exploration and adventure. Your personal growth and clarity come through emotional challenges and profound emotional experiences.

The constant changes in your life, including your always-changing feelings, can be stimulating and exciting for you, though sometimes overwhelming. Your many and varied experiences teach you to wait for the right timing, in alignment with your Strategy and Authority.

Gate 36 is part of the experiential path within the Sensing Circuit. When the gate is defined in your chart, you seek to transform inexperience into experience, a transition which is felt personally but can be (and often is) applied for the good of the collective.

In its highest expression, this energy seeks to expand the boundaries of human experience and push through limitations–real or perceived. Bicycling on a tightrope across the Grand Canyon is an extreme but vivid example.

Low Expression of this Gate

If Gate 36 is defined in your chart, your low expression of this energy can be emotional turbulence. Driven by your quest for adventure and new exploration, you create chaos around you as you leap into the next exciting challenge (without following your Strategy and Authority).

Boredom is your biggest fear and you’ll do anything to avoid it, including creating or attracting emotional crises. For you, life is all about the experience itself, not the outcome or result… and not even about the person you shared the experience with. This can be especially disappointing (for either or both parties) in relationships and sexual encounters.

Often, experiences don’t measure up to your expectations which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and restlessness.

Passions of this Gate

With your Gate 36 defined, you have a passion for adventure and new challenges. You seek the thrill of the unknown, the untried, and the excitement of new possibilities. You like to “push the envelope” and explore new territory–literally and figuratively.

You may also have a passion for fulfilling your sexual desires–for the good of the collective, of course. {wink wink}

Tips for Using this Energy

-Feelings and fears are “transitory” so seize the moment and enjoy the experience (but be sure to enter it correctly according to your Strategy and Authority, which may involve waiting for the right timing).

-Release any anxiety about stepping into the unknown of your next new adventure and embrace the experience fully–chaos and all!

-If fear holds you back, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone–you’ll be glad you did!

-Your resolve to dive into something new will be tested! Accept and embrace the challenge.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Solar Plexus Center:

Gate 30, with a passion for “passion.” If your Gate 30 is defined, start noticing how much you are driven by your desires and passions. Others may even call you “intense.”

Series: Passions of the Solar Plexus #3 – Gate 22

Circuit Group: Individual
The Individual Circuit Group serves the world by bringing forth uniquely individual change (mutation) which indirectly empowers others to transform. It is personal energy, here to follow its own direction and not fit in with others.

Circuit: Knowing
The Knowing Circuit energies are agents of the creative process that drives human growth and evolution. These energies understand the world by simply “knowing,” not based on logic or experience.

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 22 defined in your chart, you are creative, expressive, and even dramatic at times. You can be very social and graceful in your interactions with others when the mood is right, though quite the opposite when the mood isn’t right.

Although Gate 22 does not get to Throat Center (unless Gate 12 is also defined), this energy yearns to express itself, influence others, and transform the world!

This is Individual (transformational) energy that has internal “knowing” and has faith in the universe and its perfect unfolding. When you surrender to right timing, you have influence and wisdom. Like all Individual energy, you may also experience melancholy and feel like you don’t fit in. While not a high expression of Gate 22, it’s also not a low expression… it’s just part of the energy.

In the highest expression, you recognize that grace, charm, and beauty come from within, and must be cultivated and valued for them to express outwardly.

Your emotional energy calibrates your heart alignment and fuels the attraction of “like” vibrations to you (which is the Law of Attraction at work). So this Gate 22 energy helps you in creating your life experience as well as being creative in traditional ways.

Low Expression of this Gate

If Gate 22 is defined in your chart, your low expression of this energy can be moody and overly dramatic. Your depth of emotion can overpower others, and when your mood is low, you can be distinctly un-charming and un-social, and even push people away.

You may only hear what you feel like hearing: mood-driven selective hearing. You may fear there is nothing worth listening to. When you do hear something of interest, you usually must hear it multiple times to fully know it.

At times you let your low vibration emotions (despair, settling, giving up, powerlessness) shut down your creative and expressive energy. And you may live in fear of not being supported by others in your passions and desires.

Passions of this Gate

With your Gate 22 defined, you have a passion for creativity, grace, and charm. You have an eye for art, an ear for music, and you’re probably poetic and romantic!

Your charm is magnetic and, when the mood is right, you can “work a room” (in a good way). Whether your Solar Plexus Center is defined or open, Gate 22 can have an emotional openness that allows you to be a great listener.

Tips for Using this Energy

-Pay attention to your moods and align your actions appropriately; e.g., if you’re in a bad mood, don’t try to socialize.

-Allow your feelings and the depths of your emotions. But–especially if your Solar Plexus Center is defined–wait before you act or speak so you gain clarity about your feelings and about the timing of sharing them; don’t act impulsively.

-Be deliberate and open in listening to others (when you’re in the mood).

-For the best experience of this energy (and the best overall life experience), develop a regular practice that helps you sustain “a high frequency of emotional energy and alignment.” In other words, do what helps you feel as good as possible as often as possible.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Solar Plexus Center:

Gate 36, with a passion for “exploration and adventure.” If your Gate 36 is defined, start noticing how much you crave new experiences and new challenges. And how much you hate/avoid boredom!

Series: Passions of the Solar Plexus #2 – Gate 37 “Peace and Harmony”

If you have the Gate 37 defined in your chart, you have a strong focus on your “tribe” and on creating peace and harmony around you. You are the one who holds the family together and you love the fellowship and food of family and community gatherings.

This is projected energy so you feel best when you are recognized by your community and are clear about your place and role… “how you fit in.”

You are a natural hugger and nurturer and you tend to build friendships and strategic alliances based on agreements: you do this and I’ll do that. This is the high integrity version of “quid pro quo” and based on win-win.

In your highest expression of this energy, you recognize inner peace as the true source of outer peace and you’re careful to stay grounded and emotionally aligned with peace and harmony. You are able to choose peace regardless of outer circumstances, or return to peace quickly after bumps in the road.

Low Expression of this Gate

There are several low expressions of this energy if Gate 37 is defined in your chart. You may not wait for or accept recognition from your family or community. You might be unfair in your bargains, not keep your agreements, and not trust others to keep theirs.

You might not be skilled at returning to peace and harmony after a disruption, and be slow to regain your stability and re-align your emotional energy.

You might be so invested in giving to others that you fail to replenish your own “cup” and serve others from your cup not your saucer, further depleting your reserves. (I first heard this analogy from Lisa Nichols, who was in The Secret, and I’ve never forgotten it. It is so applicable to the Gate 37.)

Finally, you may withdraw from others, rejecting and walking away from the very acceptance and belonging that you so crave. This is emotional energy!

Passions of this Gate

With your Gate 37 defined, you have a passion for peace, harmony, and fairness, and for creating agreements that bring these forth and support them. Though you choose to keep peace in most circumstances, you are not necessarily passive–you can be a warrior for peace (in a peace-guided way).

You are fiercely loyal and feel heart-broken when agreements and/or loyalty are not upheld. You are also passionately physical in your expressions of affection and connection, so being in quarantine or social-distancing from friends and family is harder on you than on most.

Tips for Using this Energy

-Create habits and practices that connect you with your inner peace and sustain your alignment with a peaceful emotional frequency.

-When things get stressful around you or within you, focus on your intention to  sustain true peace, then BE or DO what brings you back to that; after you’ve been knocked off center, take a few moments to return to and realign with your core of peace and harmony.

-Be sure all agreements are VERY clear to all parties, no assumptions or ambiguities.

-Take a few moments to explore and perhaps re-define peace—what it looks like, feels like, its true meaning—and meditate on it often. Deliberately cultivate inner peace.

-Be active and involved in your tribe and communities, and be patient for their recognition of your contributions.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Solar Plexus Center:

Gate 22, with a passion for “creativity and grace.” If your Gate 22 is defined, start noticing when you’re in a state of grace and creative flow, and when you’re not. Both are important and part of who you are.

Series: Passions of the Solar Plexus #1 – Gate 6 “Impact and Intimacy”

Circuit: Defense
The Defense Circuit energies provide protection, resources, procreation, caring, nourishment, bonding, transmission of values, and even the impetus to fight. These energies create strong families and united tribes to ensure survival.

High Expression of this Gate

If you have the Gate 6 defined in your chart, you are here for both impact and intimacy. This is an emotional and creative energy that can include creating new human life through sexual intimacy. It is also an energy that defends the tribe and will wage war if needed.

Mostly this energy functions as a gatekeeper determining when and with whom you will be intimate. Gate 6 is part of an “emotional wave” channel to the Solar Plexus and so it’s best to take time to make correct choices. This involves managing the wave of emotions (your own or from others) from the Solar Plexus Center and requires emotional maturity for optimal choices. War and procreation are not to be entered into lightly!

When conflicts are resolved, intimacy can follow. Thus, if you have the Gate 6 defined, you can also be a peacemaker when the mood and timing are right.

Low Expression of this Gate

In the low expression, this energy is called conflict or friction. While growth sometimes requires friction—think of friction in the muscle when doing a bicep curl and how it results in muscle growth—this energy can at times resort to unproductive conflict and friction just to make an impact.

As the Spleen Center has fears associated with its gates, so does the Solar Plexus Center. The Gate 6’s fear is the fear of intimacy.

Passions of this Gate

From an emotional perspective, your passion with the Gate 6 defined is to connect intimately with others… or at least to make a lasting impression! Learn to leverage this passion to create the relationships and intimacy you desire.

This is powerful tribal energy penetrates others’ auric fields which may be uncomfortable for them. Keep in mind that intimate interpersonal connection may not be as natural for others as it is for you.

Tips for Using this Energy

-Pay attention to your feelings and mood and the effect you have on others. You may be unaware of your impact.

-If your Gate 6 and your Solar Plexus Center are defined, wait for clarity through your emotional wave in ALL things. You are not designed for quick or spontaneous decisions.

-If your Gate 6 is defined but your Solar Plexus Center is undefined, the intensity of others’ emotional waves will be amplified and expressed through your Gate 6 energy. So be especially aware of your mood and your impact.

-Realize that others may not be ready for, or comfortable with, your natural level of intimacy.

-Trust your own sense of inner guidance and timing (follow your Strategy and Authority) to know whether to focus on friction and conflict in a given situation or to smooth the troubled waters.

Next gate moving clockwise around the Solar Plexus Center:

Gate 37, with a passion for “harmony.” If your Gate 37 is defined, start noticing your impulse to keep peace and create harmony around you.

Series: Passions of the Solar Plexus – Introduction

This post begins a series that explains the energy of each gate around the Emotional Solar Plexus Center so you can learn to harness your natural passions and creative energy to manifest the life you desire.

Emotional energy is a frequency of energy that brings richness and creativity to our lives. It is home to the passion and intensity that distinguish us from  fellow animals on this planet. Romantic love, anguish, poetry, empathy, compassion, magnificent works of art, soaring pieces of music, and even revolution are all contained in the Emotional Solar Plexus Center of the Human Design chart.

This center is one of nine geometrical shapes on the chart, called energy centers. The Solar Plexus is the only one that is both an awareness center and a motor center. Motors provide energy for taking action while awareness centers gives us energy for self-awareness and conscious intelligence.

This combination makes the Solar Plexus the most complex of the nine centers and gives it tremendous impact on our lives.

The emotional energy in this center operates in waves, like a sine wave on a graph. It has ups and downs, highs and lows. These natural cycles are experienced directly by the half of the population that has this center defined (colored) on their chart.

The other half of the population has this center open (white) which means they take in and amplify this energy, and the related emotional waves, from the defined Solar Plexus Centers around them. They experience this energy indirectly and can develop great wisdom about emotional energy because they experience such wide variations in the possibilities of this energy.

Because emotions can be intense and not logical or rational, emotional waves cause distortions in our perception of the world. This is especially true for the emotionally defined among us. At the top of your emotional wave you may feel excited about an opportunity, but at the bottom of your wave you may have a very different feeling about it.

Thus, if you are emotionally defined, it’s crucial for you to understand the energy dynamics at play here, and to take your time in making decisions. You reach clarity only after waiting through at least one of your wave cycles so you can see the distortions and the variable feelings caused by it. [I’ll explain more about decision-making in a future post.]

The Metaphysical Role of the Solar Plexus

Emotional energy has a biochemical basis in the body but its role and impact go far beyond our physical nature. Our emotions, usually triggered by our thoughts and beliefs, calibrate our heart energy located in the G Center (diamond shape in middle of chart).

The G Center is home to our personal magnetic monopole which connects us to the collective energy of the universe and also attracts to us people, events, and circumstances that resonate with our heart energy. This is where and how the Law of Attraction works. It’s all about our magnetic resonance field.

So, our emotional feelings play a vital role in creating our direction and experiences in life. They truly create our reality!

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

Yet, it rarely seems quite as simple as changing our thoughts to instantaneously change our life. We are, after all, very complex beings. Thankfully, Human Design helps illuminate our complexity and gives us tools for understanding and navigating the labyrinth of connections and influences that make us who we are.

What Are the “Passions of the Solar Plexus”?

Each center on the Human Design bodygraph has several “gates” attached to it, which combine with other gates to form channels which then connect the centers to each other. There are 64 gates in the Human Design system, and it takes two gates to form a channel.

The gates are expressions and archetypes of the human experience, and the gates that are connected to a center are related to the energy of that center.

The energy of a center gets “filtered” through the defined (colored) gates attached to it in order to be expressed. This is true whether the center itself is defined or open. If there are no defined gates attached to a center, then that center is unlimited in its expression.

Each of the seven gates attached to the Solar Plexus Center reflects one aspect of the emotional and creative potential of the center. I call them the “Passions of the Solar Plexus.”

For example, Gate 6 has a passion for having impact and intimacy. Gate 37 has a passion for creating peace and harmony.

When you have ANY Solar Plexus gates defined in your chart, using those “passions” correctly will allow you to authentically express your creative power in your life.

It’s also important to understand the Solar Plexus Gates that are open (white) in your chart, because:

  • People in your life may have those defined and knowing THEIR creative powers will help you in your interactions with them.
  • If you are around someone who has those gates defined, you will take in and amplify that energy. Even though you don’t carry the energy of those gates consistently, you will experience and possibly express those energies at times. Remember, we ALL experience ALL of the chart!
  • When planets or other celestial bodies are passing through any of the Solar Plexus Gates (transiting), you will likely feel those energies and may notice those around you expressing them, too.

Bottom Line

These energies—the Passions of the Solar Plexus—affect the way we exert our creative power in the world… which determines our life experience. Armed with this knowledge, you can consciously leverage these energies to your advantage while remaining aligned with the truth and magnificence of Who You Are.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore all seven of the gate energies connected to the Solar Plexus Center, one at a time. For simplicity, we’ll start with Gate 6, on the left side of the Solar Plexus Center, and move clockwise around it.

Quick Tip: How the sun and planets “transit” through the Gates

Sun Transiting Through the Gates

The “big picture” of the Human Design chart is the mandala that shows the 64 I’Ching hexagrams in the outer circle, the corresponding 64 gate numbers inside that, the 12 astrological signs inside that, and the Human Design bodygraph in the middle.

The 64 gate energies of Human Design represent the archetypes of our experiences and expressions as human beings. They are the foundational aspects of who we are and how we interact.

Each year the sun moves counterclockwise around the gates of the mandala (like the sun moves through the astrological signs), spending approximately 6 days in each gate. For deeper understanding, know that the sun progresses through all 6 lines of a gate before moving into the next gate.

As the sun (or any other celestial body) moves through a gate it “activates” the energy of that gate. This means that the energy is released to “flow” to us. The sun is considered the most dominant and important transit to be aware of.

The Rest of the Transits

All the other planetary bodies are also moving around the mandala, in their own timing. Together they form the “transits” which exert influence on everyone. When the sun or any other planetary body is in a particular gate, everyone on earth temporarily experiences the activation of that energy. We are all “bathed” in that energy. This is what is meant when you hear that a particular energy is transiting.

Which planet (or sun, earth, or node) is activating a gate will determine how that gate energy impacts us. For example, if the earth is activating a gate then that gate energy will be very grounding. If Mercury is activating a gate, that gate energy will affect how or what we communicate.

How Transits Work

The transits do NOT change your chart. The energetic structure of your chart remains the same throughout your life. But the transits affect us and can temporarily give us the “flavor” of experiencing that energy directly. A transit can even give us the temporary experience of having defined centers at either end of the transiting gate if the transit completes a channel in your chart (this is called an “electromagnetic”) or if multiple planetary transits bring an entire channel into activation at the same time.

Just remember that these effects are temporary and usually mild, if they are felt at all. However, if you are particularly sensitive personally or very aware of energies around you, knowing what the transits are doing can help you to make sense of your experiences and put these energies into their proper perspective.

Knowing about them can also help you to “leverage” those energies when they are available. For example, if you have an open Will Center (also called the Heart or Ego Center) and a particular transit completes a channel for you giving you temporary definition in your Will Center, you can know that you will have greater access to willpower energy and to deliberately exerting your will during that transit period.

I have two favorite resources for keeping track of the transits:

  1. Karen Curry Parker’s 2020 Human Design Evolution Guide, which focuses on the sun transits and provides affirmations, writing assignments, and EFT setups for each transit; it is updated annually. (this is an affiliate link)
  2. The Zen Human Design Pocket Ephemeris, which shows all of the transits for the year in a handy pocket-size booklet; it is updated annually. There is also a multi-year ephemeris in a larger book format available. I use the 2001-2025 edition. (this is not an affiliate link)

Also, most free online chart software will allow you to create a Just Now chart which shows all the planetary gate activations at the moment you create the chart.

How Does Your Personal Chart Relate to the Transits?

Your Human Design chart is a snapshot of the transits at the moment of your birth (shown as the black gate numbers) and at approximately 3 months prior to your birth (shown as the red gate numbers). As you understand your chart and the impacts of those gate energies on your life, you’ll begin to realize the potential impact that these transiting energies have every moment of our lives. Nothing stays still out there! The planets are always moving and always activating energies that affect us.

The imprinting of the transits at our birth is their most powerful impact on us. But also we swim in a sea of transit energies from the moment we are born.

Series: Ego Energies of the Will #4 – Gate 40 “Withhold”

This series explains the energy of each gate around the Will Center so you can learn to leverage willpower and make your impact on the world in ways that are correct for YOU. For each gate, we’ll cover the circuitry of the gate, its gifts and challenges, its “impact,” and practical ways to apply this information.

If you have the Gate 40 defined in your chart, you are here to be a hard worker who derives satisfaction from delivering what you promised and from contributing to the tribe through your efforts. Your central challenge is to balance work with rest, so you don’t burn out your energy.

Along with rest you also need alone time to recover your energy and to establish your independence from the tribe. The Gate 40 energy wants to be independent but also wants to belong—a core conundrum for this gate. Gate 40 is considered one of the three gates of aloneness. The other two are Gates 12 and 33.

Part of your work-related satisfaction comes from feeling appreciated and being rewarded for your efforts. Your best strategy for this is to be very clear about boundaries, promises, agreements, and expectations—what you are willing to do and what you expect in return, and what others are willing to do and what they expect of you.

Forgiveness of yourself and others helps to smooth misunderstandings, heal relationship wounds, recover personal energy, and foster a healthy community.

Low Expression of this Gate

In the low expression of this energy, you may be over-promising and over-working to prove your value, ensure your place in the tribe, and earn your rewards. Burnout is a common result especially if you are pushing with Will Center energy (whether your Will Center is defined or open) and not resting. Because Gate 40 is associated with the stomach, overwork can also lead to stomach problems such as ulcers or reflux.

Loneliness (which is different from aloneness) can be a painful low experience of this energy, feeling like you’re on the outside looking in, wanting to be part of the tribe but feeling like you don’t belong.

If you are not feeling appreciated or supported by your tribe/family/community, or if agreements are not being honored, you may withhold the “fruits of your labor” and not share or contribute the results of your hard work. You may also withhold forgiveness as a way of exerting your will.

Ego Impact of this Gate

From an ego perspective, your impact with Gate 40 comes from withholding your work, energy, resources, or forgiveness as retaliation against perceived unfairness in the bargains and agreements of life.

Your drive for independence can cause you to pull away from others (withholding yourself). Then your loneliness pulls you back into the tribe for the interdependence that is the cornerstone of tribal energy, requiring forgiveness and renegotiating agreements.

Tips for Using this Energy

-Make sure you REST and recover from all that you do.

-Make sure agreements and expectations are very clear; renegotiate them as needed.

-Ask for what you need—appreciation, rest, connection, alone time.

-When you feel lonely, let this energy drive you to reconnect you with your tribe/community.

-Recognize your role and place in the tribe even when you are “feeling” like an outsider. In this particular case, trust the evidence around you instead of your feelings.

-Be deliberate about practicing forgiveness. Forgive yourself first, then forgiving others comes more easily.

This concludes our clockwise ride through the gates of the Will Center.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. I’d love to hear your feedback!

And keep an eye out for more series like this one.
