New Group for Reflectors! Explore and grow with fellow Reflectors

I recently reached out to a colleague, Leslie vanWinkle, who is a Reflector and a Human Design Specialist, about creating an opportunity for Reflectors to be together and learn together.

She is excited and moving forward with putting together an online group where Reflectors can:

  • come together and support each other
  • learn how to decondition and release the influence of other people and the environment (without getting overwhelmed and hijacked by the energy of others), and
  • explore how Reflectors can step into their unique role in service to their communities.

If learning more about (and possibly joining) this group is something that appeals to you, please send an email to:
Leslie vanWinkle at  humandesign4lm@gmail.com   (the “lm” in the address stands for Life Mastery)

Leslie has created a Facebook group that is open to Reflectors and family members/loved ones of Reflectors, with more events in the planning stages. Input and co-creation from group members is welcomed!

She has a handout that is particularly useful for Reflectors, which she will send to you along with directions for how to join the Facebook group. (Just give her a few days; as a Reflector, she follows her own internal timing).

In your email to Leslie, please tell her a bit about yourself.  For example:

When did you learn you were a Reflector?  How has that affected your life?  Have you had a Human Design Reading yet?  What’s your biggest challenge as a Reflector (or as the ally of a Reflector?

She is looking forward to connecting with each of you and inviting you into the group.

“Human Design TYPES in Relationships” Series: Reflectors

Reflectors – “Mirror, mirror …”

Reflector ImageReflectors, the last Type in our series on Types in Relationship, are very rare (less than 1% of the population) but are very important pieces in the whole puzzle of humanity.

They are here to reflect the health and well-being of the community they belong to. We gain clarity about ourselves as a group (and to some extent, personally) as we see ourselves reflected back to us through the Reflector—they are our mirror.

They are exceptionally wise beings who should be sitting on a purple cushion being consulted by leaders and elders regarding the health and correct direction of the community. But our modern day environment is often not very Reflector-friendly.

All nine of their Energy Centers are OPEN (white), so they are energetically open and very sensitive beings. Because of this, they are more influenced than any other Type by the Gate energies moving through the moon—all 64 Gates move through the Moon every lunar cycle of 29 days.

To make correct decisions, a Reflector must wait 29 days—through a full lunar cycle—to see how they feel about the decision after moving through all those energetic influences.

You can imagine how challenging that decision-making Strategy is in today’s fast-paced society!

With this basic understanding of Reflectors, we’ll look at their issues in relationships after the description of this Series below.

About This Series

Human Design gives us deeply insightful knowledge about the nature of WHO we are and HOW we behave as human beings.

Your personal Human Design chart (you can get your free Human Design chart here) helps you understand the energy dynamics and personality characteristics of YOU.

Human Design also helps you understand the other people around you and the nature of YOUR relationship with them.

This makes possible the achievement of supportive, fulfilling,
and constructive relationships in every area of your life.
And in every relationship in your life!

Wouldn’t THAT be something!

This series of articles about “Human Design TYPES in Relationships” will help you move forward along this most noble and worthy path. 😉

Today’s article explores how the REFLECTOR TYPE interacts with OTHERS.

Quick Refresher

There are five TYPES of people in Human Design. Type is determined by which Energy Centers (geometrical shapes on your Human Design Chart) are colored in and how they are connected to each other. In other words, your Type reflects your personal energy configuration. Type is usually indicated in writing on a Chart.

Each TYPE has a Role to play in life and has a particular decision-making and action-taking Strategy that is the best and most correct way for that TYPE to operate in life.

Here is a very brief description of the TYPES and their Roles and Strategies:

Manifestor approximately 8% of the population
Role: to initiate action from ideas
Strategy: inform everyone in your “impact field” before you take action
Click here for my article about Manifestors in Relationships

Generator approximately 37% of the population
Role: to find the right work and the right partner in life
Strategy: wait to respond with your Sacral energy before you take action
Click here for my article about Generators in Relationships

Manifesting Generator approximately 33% of the population
Role: to find the right work and the right partner in life (and to find the fastest way to do things)
Strategy: wait to respond with your Sacral energy then inform everyone in your “impact field” before you take action
Click here for my article about Manifesting Generators in Relationships

Projector approximately 21% of the population
Role: to manage, guide and direct the energies of others
Strategy: wait to be invited into life’s big decisions (love, marriage, career, where you live), and wait to be asked or recognized before sharing your wisdom
Click here for my article about Projectors in Relationships

Reflector less than 1% of the population
Role: to reflect the health of our communities back to us
Strategy: wait 29 days (full lunar cycle) for clarity before you take action

Reflectors “need” people because they are “non-energy beings” and rely on the energetic connections that others provide. But they also need alone time to discharge energy they take in through their nine Open Centers.

Like the Projector and Manifestor, the Reflector does not have “sustainable energy.”  Only Generators and Manifesting Generators have that. So Reflectors are not wired to “work” a typical job sustainably, which can be an issue in relationships and in earning a living.

They must also talk about their decisions to others, as they are not designed to know themselves and only find their own clarity by seeing it reflected back to them by others. (Yes, it works both ways to some extent!)

They have a VERY different life experience than all of the other Types, so Reflectors can feel alone and misunderstood, and also suffer deep disappointment. They need more attention than most other people, and may at times feel inadequate and believe that they don’t fit in anywhere.

Some famous Reflectors are: Richard Burton, Sandra Bullock, Uri Geller, Rosalynn Carter, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, H.G. Wells, Yul Brenner

If You ARE a Reflector…..

  • You must manage your energy; it is not sustainable.
  • Your have a subtle but unmistakable personal power from your deep wisdom.
  • Recognize and embrace that you are someone who needs others.
  • Take time to make decisions (at least 29 days); don’t be rushed.
  • Talk to others and/or journal during your decision-making process to build your clarity over time.
  • You need a consistent and supportive group of friends and loved ones.
  • Don’t criticize yourself for your changeability—you are designed to be open and fluid… you are not fixed, and not designed to be certain about things.
  • Know that some people won’t like seeing what you reflect back to them.
  • Learn to manage your theme of disappointment. Follow your strategy to minimize energy drains and disappointments.
  • Figure out how to remove yourself from constant bombardment of energy from others—your sensitivity is easily overwhelmed in large crowds or with constant exposure.

If You LOVE a Reflector….

  • Love them as they are, don’t try to change them; appreciate their very important role for humanity.
  • Give them space and time to themselves.
  • Allow them to manage their energy; don’t push them.
  • Honor their long decision-making cycle.
  • Let them talk—they need to hear their issues and feelings reflected back to them through you.
  • Help them recognize when an environment isn’t healthy for them.
  • Know that they may “need” you more than you need them.
  • Know that you will see the truth about yourself through them—and be okay with that.
  • Don’t take their disappointments personally.

I invite you to share below any success stories you have had as a Reflector or as someone in relationship with a Reflector. Your generosity in sharing for the benefit of everyone is greatly appreciated!

UPDATE – spring 2018

I reached out to a colleague, Leslie vanWinkle, who is herself a Reflector and a Human Design Specialist, about collaborating with other Reflectors to create an opportunity for Reflectors to be together and learn together.

She has put together an online group where Reflectors can:

  • come together and support each other
  • learn how to decondition and release the influence of other people and the environment (without getting overwhelmed and hijacked by the energy of others), and
  • explore how Reflectors can step into their unique role in service to their communities.

This Facebook group is open to Reflectors and family members of Reflectors, with more events in the planning stages.  Input and co-creation from other Reflectors is welcomed!

Health Indicators in Your Chart – Part 1: The Five Types

Use Your Human Design Chart to Help You Stay Healthy and Vibrant – Introduction

There is no shortage of theories and advice for addressing health issues and challenges, and for attempting to maximize our well-being.

Here is a very different approach:  use your Human Design Chart!

[When you’ve read this article (Part 1),
Click here to read Part 2 about the Nine Centers
Click here to read Part 3 about Significant Gates and Channels ]

Your Human Design Chart contains information about the energy configuration you carry—it shows the energetic structure you were born with. (Click here if you don’t have your Chart yet.)

This set of energies interacts within you, influencing your behavior and your ability to handle stress and pressure, and determining the most effective way for you to operate in the world.

Your set of energies also interacts with the people around you, influencing them and being influenced by them.

Evelyn's ChartThe energies you carry (your “definition”) are colored in on your chart. These are energies you experience consistently and broadcast out to the world.

The Centers, gates and channels that are white (your “openness” ) are areas where you take in the energy of others. The inconsistency and intensity of these open areas can be confusing and overwhelming, but our openness is also our greatest source of wisdom in life. This wisdom comes from experiencing the full range of human expression in each area where we are open.

How Your Chart Affects You

The Human Design Chart is a bit like a circuit board. Energy flows through completed (“Defined”) channels, which are the colored-in bars between the geometric shapes on the chart (which are called Energy Centers).

A completed channel activates, colors in, and energizes the Centers at either end of that channel.

The channels and Centers that are colored in on your Chart determine your Type, which describes your overall role and nature and which gives you the decision-making and action-taking strategy that is specifically correct for you.

The Centers also determine many of your behavior characteristics and behavioral patterns.

Human Design for Success & Well BeingUnderstanding and using this information about YOU can help you not only actively work with your natural tendencies so you maximize and leverage your full potential, but also allow you to deliberately transform behaviors and patterns that are not aligned with your natural energies.

Our “Systems”

Our health and well-being are determined by the proper flow and functioning of the many systems in our body, including circulatory, endocrine, and immune systems, to name a few.

There are also electrical and energy flows through and around our bodies (auras and our etheric body, for example) that affect us as well. Many believe that healing and optimizing these systems is the first step to changing our physical bodies.

The energetic structure shown in your Human Design Chart gives you a specific way to understand and work with some of this energy.

The “Not Self”

Well Being in Your Human DesignUsing Human Design as a tool for your well-being gives you access to recognizing and shifting some of the core issues around your own health tendencies and patterns.

The number one cause of illness may turn out to be the “Not Self.” This means living a life that does not align with or express our Authentic Self—which is our Human Design “definition” and the energetic structure we were born with. (For more information, see this article on the Not Self.)

When we’re out of alignment with our true nature, especially with our Type, we tend to have more pain (emotional and physical), more suffering, and a greater chance for physical illness.

Part 1:  The Types

In this first part of a three-part series of articles on the topic of using Human Design to improve our well-being, we look specifically at the five Types in Human Design. (Your Human Design Chart shows which Type you are.)

Manifestors
Configured specifically to “get things started,” Manifestor Types have the energy for initiating but not the sustainable energy for “doing” all of it. They are designed to start things but not necessarily finish them… and definitely not to do all the work of implementing them.

Their correct approach is to get in, get something started, and get out. When they don’t operate this way and/or when they try to do too much, they can burn out (often around age 50) or shut down their energy, and possibly have health issues.

Here are a few ways that Manifestors negatively impact their health:
•    Doing too much “doing;” not letting others do the implementing
•    Trying to do the follow up, maintenance and ongoing management of anything
•    Trying to keep up energetically with the Generators and Manifesting Generators (who do have sustainable energy for doing)
•    Not initiating enough—some Manifestors shut down their initiating capacity which bottles up their energy and makes them angry or numb (or both)
•    Not informing the people who will be impacted by their actions before they take those actions.

Any of the above qualifies as living the “Not Self” for a Manifestor and could negatively affect their energy levels as well as their physical health. Read more about being a Manifestor here.

Generators
This Type has sustainable energy for doing, and doing, and doing. This is powerful life force and work force energy. Generators are designed to have a “full tank of gas” every morning and to use up that energy before they go to bed.

Although their energy is sustainable, it is not inexhaustible. Generators can and do burn out if they’re not living true to their Type.

Here are some ways that Generators can lose energy or burn out:
•    Not loving the work they do, or the people they’re with
•    Not getting enough physical activity during the day (sedentary lifestyles are hard on Generators)
•    Not following their Sacral guidance (gut feelings) about what to do and when to do it
•    Pushing themselves too hard and not resting when their energy needs recharging

Generators are designed to do work they love and to master it. Read more about being a Generator here.

Manifesting Generators
This Type also has sustainable life force and work force energy for doing. Like Generators, they are designed to start with a “full tank of gas” every morning and use up that energy before they go to bed.

They are also designed to be fast processors (the fastest of the five Types), have a lot going on, and be good at multi-tasking. They may skip steps in their speed to get things done, and that’s actually correct for them.

Although their energy is fast and sustainable, it is not inexhaustible (even though they often think they are inexhaustible!).

Here are some ways that Manifesting Generators can lose energy or burn out:
•    Not loving the work they do, or the people they’re with
•    Not getting enough physical activity during the day (sedentary lifestyles are really hard on Manifesting Generators)
•    Not following their Sacral guidance (gut feelings) about what to do and when to do it
•    Pushing themselves too hard and not resting when their energy needs recharging
•    Feeling frustrated and impatient (even angry) when others don’t move fast enough or things don’t happen fast enough for them.
•    Not informing the people who will be impacted by their actions before they take those actions.

Manifesting Generators are designed to do work they love and to master it, and also to find the fastest way through things. Read more about being a Manifesting Generator here.

Projectors
This Type is designed to manage, guide and direct the energies of others. They do not have sustainable energy for doing all of the work themselves. However, they are very powerful when using their energy correctly.

Some Projectors burn out around age 35-45 if they have pushed themselves too hard and lived their “Not Self.” I’ve seen many who have (or have had) autoimmune or “mystery” illnesses. But I’ve also seen many Projectors who do not burn out or get sick.

Here are some examples of Projectors not living according to their energy configuration:
•    Pushing to make things happen (Projectors need to wait for invitations into the big things in life, like jobs, careers, relationships, moving)
•    Offering opinions, guidance or advice without being asked
•    Not waiting for the right timing; not allowing things to unfold naturally
•    Trying to keep up with Generators or Manifesting Generators (who DO have sustainable energy)
•    Not taking time to recover after an intense effort (Projectors can work very intensely for finite periods of time, then need time off before they can bounce back)
•    Feeling guilty, embarrassed or bitter about not easily being able to make things happen (which is the Manifestor’s role, not the Projector’s)
•    Feeling that life isn’t fair; blaming themselves or others

Once a Projector burns out, recovery can take a while (sometimes years). It’s best for them to manage their energy pro-actively, and avoid burnout. Read more about being a Projector here.

ReflectorsReflector Image
These rare people (less than 1% of the population) are here to reflect back to us the health of our communities. They help us to see ourselves more clearly.

Reflectors are very Open beings, energetically, having no Defined (colored in) Energy Centers. Their energy is not sustainable so, like Manifestors and Projectors, Reflectors need to manage their energy and not try to keep up with the energizer bunnies of the world (Generators and Manifesting Generators).

Here are a few ways that Reflectors operate from their “Not Self”:
•    Trying to function with sustainable energy, and not taking rest and recovery time
•    Being exposed to too many people at once – Reflectors are sensitive to others’ energies
•    Leaping into decisions, and possibly regretting those decisions – Reflectors need 29 days to make important decisions
•    Not talking with others about their important decisions while they wait
•    Not surrounding themselves with trusted, loving and consistent friends and family
•    Feeling deep disappointment.

Reflectors are great gifts to the world and deserve to be supported in taking good care of themselves. Read more about being a Reflector here.

In Part 2 of this article we’ll look at the nine Energy Centers, and in Part 3 we’ll look at some specific Gates and Channels.

I welcome your comments!

How to Tell If You’re Living Your NOT-SELF — Part 2

In our recent article How to Tell If You’re Living Your NOT-SELF — Part 1, we began an exploration of the useful and revealing Human Design concept of the NOT-SELF by looking at Generator and Projector Types.

Here in Part 2, we complete the topic by looking at Manifestor, Manifesting Generator, and Reflector Types.

The introductory sections are repeated below so you don’t have to read Part 1 to understand Part 2!

~~~~~~~~
Does your path feel a bit bumpy at times? Are you struggling, or seriously lacking “flow” in your life? If so, you may be experiencing your NOT-SELF theme!
“What is a NOT-SELF Theme?”
confused round faceWhen you are NOT living according to the decision-making Strategy of your Human Design Type, you are probably living your NOT-SELF.
“So, How Can I Know Who My REAL-SELF Is?”
That’s easy. Your Human Design Type (from your personal chart—if you don’t have yours click here) is the fundamental energy structure you were born with. This structure determines the role in life you are “designed” to play and also gives you the decision-making and action-taking strategy that is specifically correct for your energy.
“Why Is That Important?”
When your choices and actions are in alignment with your natural energetic structure—which they are by using the Strategy for your Type—then you are living true to your real SELF… your Authentic SELF. And that’s when “flow” happens. That’s when synchronicity shows up. That’s when you’re in the right place at the right time, and things start to get easier.
“Feels Like Magic?”
You’ve probably had moments in life like that… when things just fall into place and everything flows smoothly. And it feels like magic. Well, it isn’t exactly magic, it is actually the correct use of energy. Specifically, it’s your actions correctly aligning with your natural energy.
We don’t usually re-create that kind of alignment in our lives easily because we don’t know what we did right! Human Design—with information about YOUR personal Type and Strategy—gives you the understanding and tools to create a lot more of that “magic” in your life.
“How Do I Find MY Type and Strategy?”
There are five Types in Human Design: Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors. Each person is one of those five Types, and each Type has its own Strategy. All you need to provide is your birth date, time and place so your personal chart can be created which shows your Type and Strategy (and much more about you as well!).
“Do I Have to Learn About All the Types?”
Even though four of the Types are not YOUR Type, I recommend that you read about all Types whenever you can. First, you will understand yourself better by knowing who you are NOT, in addition to knowing who you ARE.
Second, you will understand the people in your life better. Simply by knowing and respecting each person’s Type, you can improve your relationships with them dramatically.
To request your own chart and charts of others, gather birth date, time (as accurate as possible) and place for each person, and go to:
www.HumanDesignforSuccess.com/free-human-design-chart/
“So, What’s My NOT-SELF Theme?”
You’ll usually find a one word description of your NOT-SELF Theme (often simply called “Theme”) on your chart—but there’s more to it than that.
Although your Type, in fact your whole chart, does not change over your lifetime what does change is how you express the energies in your chart. There’s a range of expression from high to low for every energy you carry.[Burn Out]
When you live your Type and Strategy, you more easily live the high expression of your energies. When you’re not living in alignment with your Type and Strategy, your energies are not aligned, you’re more easily influenced by others, you’re more easily distracted away from your Authentic SELF, and you more readily experience the lower expressions of your energies—this is your NOT-SELF.
In this article (Part 2), we explore the NOT-SELF themes for three of the Human Design Types: Manifestors, Manifesting Generators and Reflectors.
The NOT-SELF Theme of Manifestors
The NOT-SELF theme of the Manifestor is Anger, and it goes both ways. You as a Manifestor may feel angry at yourself or others, AND others may be angry with you. And you may not know why!
Antidote for Anger—INFORM
AngerWhen you are NOT following your strategy of INFORMING, your theme of anger shows up. Informing means letting people who are in your “impact field” know what you’re up to.
You probably don’t realize how much your actions affect those people. Your energy is designed for “initiating” actions… making things happen. When you are not informing, those around you won’t know what to expect and they may feel uncomfortable or even a little scared of you!
They also feel left out when you single-mindedly head off to do something—hence, their anger and mistrust toward you. When your projects or relationships don’t go as you would like, you may either blame others or yourself—hence, your anger.
You Have Good Reasons
It’s logical that you would be reluctant to inform others about what you are doing:
1) It interrupts your creative flow and slows you down.
2) You don’t want to be told you can’t or shouldn’t do it.
3) They may already be mad at you so you’re not inclined to inform them!
How to Minimize Your Theme of Anger
Follow Strategy: It won’t feel natural or comfortable at first, but make the effort to INFORM. It’s the best way to avoid anger. You have a powerful energetic presence; informing people lets them know what to expect so they won’t feel excluded or resentful any more.
Also, ask for help when you need it. And resist reacting with anger when others offer to help you, even though you haven’t asked for help. They mean well.
The NOT-SELF Theme of Manifesting Generators
Your chart shows your theme as Frustration, but that’s just part of the story. Because you are a Manifesting Generator, you also have some of the Manifestor’s theme of Anger. Often, those two will combine into impatience!
Frustration
Your Frustration shows up when you try to make things happen, instead of waiting for something to respond to before taking action. Waiting to respond—and responding with your Sacral sounds—is your Strategy. When you don’t wait for the inner guidance of your Sacral energy, things often don’t go well.
You’ve probably had the experience of feeling stuck or that nothing you try seems to work. Following your Sacral’s guidance will get you moving again, in the right directions for YOU!
Verbalize your Sacral’s “gut reaction” with “uh-huh” for yes, and “uhn-uhn” for no, every time life presents you with something to respond to… which is many times daily. If you are emotional by Design (large triangle on lower right of chart is light brown), use your Sacral responses throughout your emotional wave to gain clarity for good decisions.
AngerAnger
Because you process and move quickly, and you’re often in your own private “busy” groove, you don’t like being interrupted or told you can’t do something. You may feel irritated or angered by this. You also don’t like being helped unless you ask for it first.
To avoid anger (from you and from others), inform others of your actions and plans. That won’t feel natural at first, but it saves time and irritated feelings.
How to Minimize Your Themes of Frustration, Anger and Impatience
Follow Strategy: Wait to respond, then inform. When something shows up in your outer reality (not your mind), your Sacral will respond—letting you know whether that thing is correct for you. Then, inform BEFORE you take action.
The NOT-SELF Theme of Reflectors
As a Reflector, your theme is Disappointment. All nine of your energy Centers are “Open” (white). This openness allows you to perceive and experience the full range of human potential and expression.
DisappointmentWhen you see unfulfilled potential and unexpressed magnificence in those around you, you are understandably saddened and disappointed.
Follow Your Strategy
Your unique decision-making and action-taking strategy is to wait 28 days (full lunar cycle) before making important decisions. During this time, talk to others so you can see the issues reflected back to you. This helps you gain the clarity you need.
If after 28 days the decision feels right, then you are free to take any and all actions to implement it. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t act. You may try waiting another cycle. And keep talking!
Don’t Leap Too Quickly
Another source of disappointment for you is making decisions and taking actions before your 28 days, and then regretting the choice and being stuck with the consequences. Cultivate patience. Your reward is not only decisions that are correct for you, but also deep wisdom about the human experience.
How to Minimize Your Theme of Disappointment
Follow Strategy:  Take your time. Wait at least 28 days for big decisions. Talk to people. Journal about your decisions, issues, and experiences. Surround yourself with a supportive and consistent group of friends and loved ones. Go with the flow. Trust. Feel good where you are—or move to someplace that feels better, but do it by following Strategy.
P.S. If you’re new to Human Design and you found some of this information confusing or unclear, I invite you to learn more through a private Reading with me (which is the best way to learn about yourself and your chart).
Quick Spotlight – Even Outward Success Doesn’t Quiet Self-Doubt
One of my clients is a Reflector Type—that rare and precious contribution to humanity (less than 1% of the population). Reflectors are open and sensitive beings here to mirror back to us the health and vitality of our communities—and ourselves. Reflectors have all nine energy centers Open (white).
This Reflector has achieved impressive success and worldwide recognition for her work and accomplishments (she’s in her mid-fifties), including psycho-spiritual work and the ability to readjust energy fields.
Yet she shared with me that until her Human Design Reading she was still criticizing herself for feeling different from others and not fitting in, and still judging herself for lacking energy and not being able to keep up with others.
This amazed me and was a great lesson and reminder that outward success does not necessarily erase the self-doubt and self-criticism that so many of us carry our whole lives… often starting in childhood.
I am happy to report, though, that over the course of her three Reading sessions she really made peace with who she is, why she’s here, and how (and why) she’s different. She’s now more honoring of herself, her special talents, and her special path. She saw where she was allowing herself to be a “victim,” she unhooked herself from that, and has found a renewed sense of direction in her life.
Every day I’m grateful for the clarity, dignity, and self-acceptance that Human Design brings to people.
Human Design Strategy
Human Design Strategy – Back to Basics
How to Make Decisions and Take Actions that Align with Your Authentic SelfQuestion Mark Face
Having a how-to manual for your life would be great, wouldn’t it!
  • Knowing when to zig and when to zag
  • Knowing the best way to approach and influence people
  • Making big decisions with confidence
  • Knowing when you are on-path to fulfill your soul’s purpose, and how to get back on track when you’ve strayed
This is the core of how your Human Design Strategy can help you. It’s the User’s Manual we’ve all been hoping for!
Even if you already know your Strategy, you will get value from reviewing these basics.
All About Energy Alignment
Here are the fundamentals of using Strategy to help you live a happy and successful life.
There are five energy Types in Human Design—each has a different energetic structure.
The five Types are called: Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, and Reflector. You learn which Type you are from your personal Human Design chart. Click here if you don’t have yours yet.
Each energy Type has a specific decision-making and action-taking Strategy.
When you make decisions and take actions using the Strategy for your Type, you align with your natural energetic structure. That alignment allows for “flow” because you’re working with your natural energy, rather than against it. It’s like turning your canoe around and floating easily downstream after having paddled upstream so hard for so long.
Your Type is the PERSONAL energy configuration you were born with-it does not change over time. The only thing that does change is how you express the energies you carry. That is addressed during a one-on-one Human Design Reading.
Your Role in Life and Your Human Design Strategy
The correct Role for you in life is directly associated with your Human Design Type. This makes it so much easier to choose the right career and work opportunities!
Human Design MandalaSome of us are designed to work, some are designed to guide and direct, and some are here to initiate work and relationships. A few of us are here to be a mirror for everyone else.
For most of us (~92%!), our correct Strategy is to wait—even if only for a split second—before making decisions and taking actions. But there is much more to it than that.
Below are the basic Roles and Strategies for each Type. In a Full Human Design Reading with me, we would spend 30 minutes or so talking about YOUR Role and Strategy, so you completely get it and know how to use it. But the summary below will give you enough to get started.
From this list you’ll also begin to understand the ways in which others are different from you.
Manifestor Role Manifestor image
  • You are here to make things happen; you are the only Type designed to initiate action directly from ideas.
  • You have a “motorized” Throat Center enabling you to impact people and be more easily heard than other Types.
Manifestor Strategy
  • Inform those in your ‘impact field’ before you take action; wait only for your own sense of timing.
  • We informally call it the “throw the spaghetti against the wall and see if it sticks” Strategy since you need to actually start things before you know if they are correct for you.
Generator RoleGenerator image
  • Generators are the workforce of the world, with sustainable life force energy for working a job, raising children, etc.
  • Your Defined Sacral Center gives you internal guidance on decisions and actions that are correct for you.
Generator Strategy
  • Wait to respond with your Sacral sounds (uh-huh is yes, uhn-uhn is no) before making decisions/taking action.
  • This means having a gut/Sacral response to everything and anything around you, which is your indicator of whether something is correct for you to take action on.
Manifesting Generator RoleManifesting Generator image
  • You are also the workforce of the world, with sustainable life force energy for working a job, raising children, etc.
  • You are the busiest of the five Types, and may skip steps in your hurry.
  • Your Defined Sacral Center gives you internal guidance for making correct decisions; your “motorized” Throat gives you impact and effectiveness.
Manifesting Generator Strategy
  • Wait to respond with your Sacral sounds (uh-huh is yes, uhn-uhn is no), then inform those in your ‘impact field’ before making decisions/taking action.
  • This means having a gut/Sacral response to everything and anything around you, which is your indicator of whether something is correct for you to take action on (though you may need to start something for final confirmation, and then not continue doing it if it no longer feels correct).
Projector RoleProjector image
  • You are here to manage, guide and direct others and their activities.
  • You are not designed to work a regular 9-5 job; your energy is powerful when used correctly but it isn’t sustainable. You need to manage your energy deliberately.
Projector Strategy
  • Wait to be invited into major choices in life (jobs/career, marriage, moving, etc.); wait to be recognized or asked before sharing your wisdom, advice or opinion.
  • When you wait, the right people will invite you to the right opportunities. But only accept invitations that feel “delicious” to you!
Reflector Role
  • You are here to reflect the well-being of your Reflector imagecommunity, family, etc., and be an early warning signal of any problems.
  • You are here to be wise about human potential and the human experience.
Reflector Strategy
  • Wait 29 days before making important decisions, then take all action needed.
  • Surround yourself with good friends and family, and talk about your decisions.
  • It may be challenging for you to find the best path for you—go with what feels good.
“Is This Your Final Decision?”
There is another factor that influences our correct decision-making—it is called Authority. It could be the subject of an entire article, but for now I’ll simply say that if your Authority (shown on your personal Human Design chart) has the word “emotional” in it, you need to wait at least a day or two after your initial response before making a decision, to see if your initial answer changes. You are not designed for spontaneous decisions! (You can learn more about how to apply your Authority in a personal Reading.)
I wrote a related article on Human Design Strategy which you can read here.
I would love to read your comments on what you’ve just learned about yourself and your Human Design Strategy, or the results you’ve had if you’re already applying your Strategy in your life. Also, feel free to share this information with your friends. (I’m happy to run charts for them too!)
Celebrity Chart: Sandra Bullock
(posted 2013/03/28)
Here is a brief look at a celebrity’s Human Design chart using just a few of many aspects and layers of a chart. Our purpose here is to give you just a partial glimpse, through Human Design, into this person’s energy dynamics.
Sandra Bullock
Birth: July 26, 1964 at 3:15 am in Arlington, Virginia
Background
Actress and comedian Sandra Bullock stepped into stardom in the 1990’s making over 20 feature films that decade alone, including Speed and While You Were Sleeping (a personal favorite of mine), finding a lucrative niche in the romantic comedy genre.
Appearing in another 15 films from 2000-2009, she solidified her position as a serious talent and box office draw. That decade included her very popular films Miss Congeniality, Crash, and The Proposal, culminating with The Blind Side in 2009 for which she won an Oscar and several other Best Actress awards and which finally showcased her dramatic acting talent.
In 2007, she was ranked as the 14th richest female celebrity with an estimated fortune of $85 million. In 2010 she was chosen by People Magazine as “Woman of the Year.”
She has two new movies due out later this year and one so far for 2014.
In her “spare time” she runs her own production company and was executive producer of the TV sitcom George Lopez in a deliberate effort to promote Hispanics in the media. She also owns two restaurants, a bakery and floral shop in Austin, Texas!
Is this powerhouse of a woman a Manifesting Generator like Angelina Jolie (profiled in January 2012)? NO! Miss Bullock is one of the rare and beautiful humans known as a Reflector!
Her Chart
As you see from her chart below, Sandra has NO DEFINED CENTERS, which means she is a Reflector Type. Reflectors are here to be a mirror for us and reflect back to us the health and well-being of their community.
Sandra Bullock Chart
A happy and stable Reflector is part of a happy and healthy community. If a Reflector is not doing well, they are either in the wrong place (“right place” is crucial for a Reflector) or there is a problem within their community that needs to be addressed and resolved.
Sandra is designed to take in people and energy and reflect it all back. Her design makes her deeply sensitive to everything around her, which likely enhances her ability to “play” other people and to have us so easily believe in her “girl next door” persona.
Her sensitivity (and probably being easily overwhelmed by noise, lots of activity, chaos and drama around her) naturally leads her to remain rather private about her life and relationships.
I’ve seen her on TV talk shows and she is somewhat quiet, very present to everyone around her, rarely interrupts, and contributes to the conversation when appropriate but is not overly focused on herself. She has great timing and is funny, and seems to go with the flow of the conversation rather than lead it. All of this is completely consistent with the highest expressions of her design.
Incarnation Cross and Profile
As Sandra has no Defined Channels or Centers, let’s look at other parts of her chart. Her Incarnation Cross (her life path) is the Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected (2). Every Cross has four components. First, in her conscious sun position, is leadership and influence (Gate 31)—which dominates her path. This is democratic leadership—not dictatorial or through power taken. She is designed to express power and influence only when it is granted to her—which it has been through formal recognition of her many successful film performances.
The second key piece of her Cross, in her unconscious sun position, is responsibility (Gate 27). This means she takes responsibility very seriously especially when it comes to leadership and the example she sets with her own behavior and actions. Unlike so many in the heady world of Hollywood who crash and burn through their own undoing, Sandra seems to have staying power and a steady path.
The third aspect of her Cross, in her conscious earth position, is fantasy, creativity, and new experiences (Gate 41). She feels grounded in her own creative imaginings of what she wants and in the impulse for new experiences. This energy gives her the ability to be a visionary in her leadership of others, but can also leave her feeling restless and ever eager for something new.
The last aspect, in her unconscious earth position, is struggle (Gate 28). This is primarily the lofty struggle for meaning and purpose in life, though it can manifest as more mundane struggles and doing things the hard way. She finds grounding and stability in holding true to what is meaningful to her and following the purpose that feels correct to her.
Overall, her path in life is to express responsible, creative and visionary leadership grounded in purpose and meaning. Thank you, Sandra, for being so beautifully “on track”! Her Cross can also involve being thrust forward by unexpected events and circumstances, which may have happened to her… and may yet happen to her.
Her 2/4 Profile means she has Hermit tendencies but can also shine in the networking and connecting with people that are so crucial in the film industry. Although I don’t know what she is like on a personal level, she probably experiences the classic “leave me alone, but where’s the party” syndrome so common for the 2/4 Profile.
A Few Gems From the Rest of Her Chart
In researching Sandra’s life and career, two things struck me—both of which clearly show up in her chart. First, she has been a generous supporter of the Red Cross, donating $4 million to their relief efforts for earthquakes and natural disasters around the world. She also does Public Service Announcements to encourage others to support clean up and rescue efforts.
Here is what I see in her chart that leads her to do these things. She is caring and responsible (Gate 27), committed to communicating that caring (Gate 29), passionate (Gate 22), and holds a deep value of distributing wealth and resources for the greater good of the whole (Gate 45). She has a life theme from age 40 onward of loving humanity and embracing the diversity of the planet (Gate 15), has a life lesson of trusting that true abundance comes from Source not material wealth (and is therefore generous with what she has), knows she leads by example (7 hanging Gates in Individual Circuitry), and is also reflecting the generosity and caring that she sees (and wants to see more of) in the world–because she is a Reflector.
The second thing that struck me was her recent marriage and divorce. She married Jesse James (motorcycle builder and host of Monster Garage show) in 2005 just before her 41st birthday. It was her first marriage. She clearly took her time deciding (very correct for her as a Reflector), although I’m sure she had MANY guys to choose from during her life and stellar career. Reflectors typically see the best in people and operate from that space.
In March 2010, there were rumors of multiple women having slept with her husband during their marriage. He publicly admitted infidelity and apologized to Sandra, then checked into a rehab center with a commitment to save their marriage. But by the end of April Sandra had filed for divorce, and it was final by the end of June.
Her Gate 49, the Gate of Revolution, in her conscious Moon drives her to stand by her principles no matter what she needs to tear apart to do that. When someone violates an important principle held by a person with the 49, there is usually no turning back, no second chance, no “do over” button. Her quick divorce demonstrated her commitment to her principles in a clear expression of her Gate 49 in action.
Final Comments
With no inherent sources of energy in her chart, she has demonstrated remarkable productivity and stamina in her career. When we do what we love in life, it gives us energy. But I would caution her to manage her energy carefully and wait at least 28 days (her decision making strategy as a Reflector) before accepting film proposals, role offers, new business endeavors, etc.  If she leaps in without waiting and without talking about her decisions with trusted friends (which is the only way she can truly know how she feels about something), she may leap into actions and opportunities that are not correct for her.
I could say much more about Sandra and her chart, but this feels like a good stopping point. I welcome your comments and observations!
Human Design Strategy Basics
[You can read an updated/expanded version of this article about Human Design Strategy HERE]
Let’s get practical.
Why bother learning all this Human Design stuff about yourself?  What good does it really do?
I could go on and on about the profound impact it makes on my clients’ lives, the life-changing difference it’s made in my life, and how it can literally give you a complete ‘paradigm shift’. (That phrase is bandied about quite a bit… but knowing your Human Design does permanently change the way you see yourself, others, and the world. That is a true paradigm shift.)
But I’m not going to. Instead, we’re going to get really practical.
Knowing your Human Design Type and Strategy Human Design Mandalagives you a decision-making and action-taking strategy that is specifically correct for YOU.
It’s not some generic approach. Not something that works for me but probably won’t work for you. Not something based on subjective answers you gave to a bunch of generalized questions.
This is completely specific to you.
It’s YOUR PERSONAL energy configuration. The one you were born with. And it doesn’t change over time. The only thing that does change is your expression of those energies. But that’s a topic for another post.
Decision-Making and Action-Taking
When you make choices and take actions in a way consistent with your personal energy blueprint, it becomes easy to make the right choices and take the right actions. And I don’t mean morally right or wrong… I mean what is specifically and personally right for YOU.
Right for who YOU are and where YOU are going in life. Right for leading you to your personal and unique purpose for being here. Right for helping you fulfill your role, express the best of you, and live life at peace with yourself and the world.
And at a practical, everyday level… it makes things go better and flow better.
Instead of pushing a boulder up a hill trying to make things happen or feeling like you’re constantly paddling upstream, you learn to float downstream and leverage the power of the current to help you get where you want to go, and have what you want to have. You work WITH your energies, not against them.
Roles and Strategies
The only way to KNOW your Role and Strategy is to know your TYPE, which you learn from your Human Design Chart. Click here if you don’t have yours yet.
There are five different Types, and each Type has its own Role and Strategy.
Some people are designed to work, some are designed to guide and direct, some are here to initiate work and relationships. Most of us (92%!) are here to wait—even if only for a split second—before making decisions and taking actions.
When you know exactly how to operate in life for YOUR greatest ease and success… it changes everything!
Below are the basic Roles and Strategies for each Type. In a Human Design Full Reading with me, we would spend 30 minutes or so talking about YOUR Role and Strategy, so you completely get it and know how to use it. But the summary below will give you enough to get started.
From this list you’ll also begin to understand the ways in which some people are so different from you.
If you are a Manifestor…
  • You are here to make things happen; you are the only Type designed to initiate action directly from ideas.
  • You have a “motorized” Throat Center enabling you to impact people and be more easily heard than other Types.
Manifestor Strategy:
  • Inform those in your ‘impact field’ before you take action; wait only for your own sense of timing.
If you are a Generator…
  • Generators are the workforce of the world, with sustainable life force energy for working a job, raising children, etc.
  • Your Defined Sacral Center gives you internal guidance on decisions and actions that are correct for you.
Generator Strategy:
  • Wait to respond with your Sacral sounds (uh-huh is yes, uhn-uhn is no) before making decisions/taking action.
If you are a Manifesting Generator…
  • You are also the workforce of the world, with sustainable life force energy for working a job, raising children, etc.
  • Your Defined Sacral Center gives you internal guidance for making correct decisions; your “motorized” Throat gives you impact and effectiveness.
Manifesting Generator Strategy:
  • Wait to respond with your Sacral sounds (uh-huh is yes, uhn-uhn is no), then inform those in your ‘impact field’ before making decisions/taking action.
If you are a Projector…
  • You are here to manage, guide and direct others and their activities.
  • You are not designed to work a regular job; you don’t have sustainable energy.
Projector Strategy:
  • Wait to be invited into major choices in life (jobs/career, marriage, moving, etc.); wait to be recognized or asked before sharing your wisdom, advice or opinion.
If you are a Reflector…
  • You are here to reflect the well-being of your community, family, etc., and be an early warning signal of any trouble.
  • Can be very wise about human potential.
Reflector Strategy:
  • Wait 29 days before making important decisions, then take all action needed.
I invite you to comment on what you’ve learned about yourself, and/or the results you’ve had if you’ve applied your Strategy in your life. Also, feel free to share this information with your friends. (I’m happy to run charts for them too!)
