Here is a brief look at a celebrity’s Human Design chart using just a few of many aspects and layers of a chart. Our purpose here is to give you just a partial glimpse, through Human Design, into this person’s energy dynamics.

Steven Spielberg

Born:   Dec. 18, 1946 at 6:16pm in Cincinnati, OH

His Background[Steven Spielberg photo]

Creative, enterprising, and focused on film making even in his early teens, Steven started making 8mm “adventure” movies with friends and filmed train wrecks of his Lionel train set—which he charged admission of 25 cents to see!

At 16 he wrote and directed a 140-minute science fiction film—which was shown at his local theatre—and he made several WWII films based on his father’s war stories.

In his early 20’s (during the late 1960’s), Steven worked at Universal Studios as an unpaid intern where he made his first short film that was theatrically released. This was followed by a stint as their youngest television director, after which he was contracted to direct four TV movies for Universal.

He went on to add screenwriter, producer, video game designer, and movie studio co-founder to his many talents, and has become one of the best-known and most influential Hollywood directors of our time. From a prolific career spanning four decades, his top films include:  Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan. His more recent works include: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Adventures of Tintin, and War Horse.

He has received many awards and recognitions, including multiple Academy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award, and being called the greatest film director of all time. He also had several highest-grossing films and box office records at the time his films came out. He is purported to be worth $3.2 billion (in 2012).

He married his second wife, Kate Capshaw, in 1991, and they have a blended family of seven children born between 1976 and 1996, including two they adopted together. Plus, he maintains a busy work schedule to this day. He turned 66 in December 2012.

His Chart

Just from reading his work history and accomplishments, I might have guessed that Steven was a Manifesting Generator.  I would have been wrong.

Steven is a no-motors Projector! This remarkably busy and productive man has no inherent energy in his chart. May this fact give inspiration and hope to all no-motors Projectors who feel they have no energy for working and perceive life as hard and unfair.

How on earth has he been able to maintain such a high level of creative output over so many decades?

Rarely do we see a more clear example of being energized by doing what you love! His life-long fascination (and talent) for story telling and movie making has taken him to the top… and he shows few signs of slowing down!

Let’s start by looking at how his one Defined Channel influences his life, then we’ll explore his Energy Centers and Gates.

7-31 The Channel of the Alpha. This is the channel of a Leader — someone who understands patterns and trends and is here to lead us into the future.  Someone with this energy represents the people rather than “rules” and is appointed or elected (not an autocrat).  Steven has clearly stepped into this “granted” leadership role—on a global scale! He doesn’t seem to mind the spotlight, but he doesn’t covet it either.

Seven of his 9 Energy Centers are OPEN, so he takes in significant energies from people around him and amplifies them.  While this can be challenging (often confusing and overwhelming), it also means he has tremendous capacity for deep wisdom in many areas of the human experience. He is easily inspired (Head), designed to be open minded (Ajna), and understands the value of both money and non-money resources (Will). He takes in and experiences other people’s emotions and passions (Solar Plexus). He amplifies their life force energy and can work intensively on projects provided he takes breaks between them (Sacral). He can leverage other’s adrenaline energy to help him get things done (Root), and he has a broad-ranging intuitive sense of what makes people feel good (Spleen).

His Open Solar Plexus is likely the source of his self-admitted desire to please people and be liked, and of his penchant for saying “yes” to helping others—whether through giving young filmmakers and others a chance at success, or creating and supporting charitable foundations.

While I found no evidence of him burning out from overwork, he did take 3 years off after directing Schindler’s List to spend more time with his family. But then he shot 3 films in the year that followed that!

I would characterize him as a high-functioning Projector who has figured out how to manage and leverage his energy. He receives and issues significant “invitations” in his life and work, obviously has great instincts about which ones to pursue, and definitely follows his bliss!

Defined Energy Centers represent strengths, as they are where we are consistent in terms of having and using those energies.  His two Defined Centers are the Throat and the Identity.

The Throat Center (brown square) is where we process communication energy and can manifest our ideas into action and form.  He has clearly been able to stimulate action and very effectively communicate stories that touch people at many levels. And he has a knack for both timing and perseverance from his Gate 46 energy.

The Identity Center (yellow diamond) governs our sense of self and direction in life. His specific energies attached to this center giving him both identity and direction include leadership (7-31 Channel), creative self-expression and contribution (Gate 1), determination and perseverance (Gate 46), and the Love of Spirit (Gate 25).  Many people with a Defined Identity Center know at an early age what they want to do in life, and Steven is no exception.

His Gate Energies (the red and black bars on his chart) are the more subtle but still significant influences on his personality. Let’s take a quick look at just a few of them that I haven’t mentioned yet.

He has the Gate of Ideas (11) in his conscious sun—he’s designed to be an ideas machine! He also has the ability to articulate (12) his insightful and transformative ideas (43) in the service of universal and unconditional love (25).

He is driven to behind-the-scenes leadership (7 in unconscious Moon) and has the Gate 50 twice in his chart—which is the energy for responsibly sharing values. His 50 in line 4 is an energy for challenging values and rules that don’t serve the greater good—and for promoting values that do. His wholesome and highly moral body of film work attests to his commitment to healthy values.

While someone with his Gate 28.6 in the conscious Moon might have struggled hard in life, including with drugs and alcohol, Steven’s early training in solid values as a Boy Scout and Eagle Scout—and perhaps his Jewish faith—kept him true to high standards for his role as a parent, an entertainer, and a moral standard-bearer promoting important social values through his work.

There is MUCH more that could be said about him through the specifics in his chart, but this gives a good sampling of the insights available from a brief overview.

I’ll close with this description by Stephen J. Dubner in his February 14, 1999 article about a multiple-day interview he did with Steven:

“Spielberg is a ferocious multitasker, an idea machine and an unusually canny businessman who has also managed to become a devout family man and a hardcore mensch.”
