His Holiness the Dalai Lama is recognized worldwide as an embodiment of peace, wisdom and compassion.

He is the 14th Dalai Lama (religious name: Tenzin Gyatso, born: Lhamo Dondrub) and the longest lived. Dalai Lamas are the head monks of the Gelug school, the newest of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, and is also well known for his lifelong advocacy for Tibetans inside and outside Tibet.

The Dalai Lama was selected at age two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama and began his training at age six, although he was only formally recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama on November 17, 1950, at age 15. The Gelug school’s government administered an area roughly corresponding to the Tibet Autonomous Region just as the new People’s Republic of China wished to assert central control over it. There is controversy over whether the respective governments ever reached an agreement for a joint Chinese-Tibetan administration.

During the 1959 Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama—concerned for his life—fled to India where he established a Tibetan government in exile and denounced the People’s Republic. He has since traveled the world, advocating for the welfare of Tibetans, teaching Tibetan Buddhism and talking about the importance of compassion as the source of a happy life. However, around the world, governments and institutions face pressure from China not to accept him.

His appeals to the United Nations for the rights of Tibetans resulted in three U.N. General Assembly resolutions calling on China to respect the human rights of Tibetans. But he and his followers remain refugees, unable to return to their home. In 1963, he set up a democratic constitution based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, creating a Tibetan elected parliament and administration from his base in Dharamshala, India.

He has authored many books and given lectures and teachings around the world, speaking about the environment, economics, women’s rights, non-violence, interfaith dialog, physics, astronomy, reproductive health, and sexuality, along with various Buddhist philosophies and practices.

Although he has succeeded in mobilizing international support for the cause of greater Tibetan autonomy and even independence, he and his 80,000 followers remain in exile.

On May 29, 2011, at age 75, the Dalai Lama retired from his political responsibilities which he transferred to the democratically elected leaders of the Central Tibetan Administration.

  1. Hi Evelyn

thank you so much for the wonderful chart and insight into his HH 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso.

I read somewhere that the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso (born on the 12th of February 1876 and died the 17th of December 1933), died early because he could foresee the difficult times coming to the people of Tibet and consequently he felt that, this required a younger person to deal with those challenges.

Just as a comment, China didn’t attempt to take over Tibet. They have taken over and are currently oppressing the Tibetan people in a most horrendous way.
